Are Evos REALLY that much better than STis? :D
Definitely very close.
Obivously, the EVO has the advantage on corner entry with the much sharper steering and extra strut travel up front. And the STi has the advantage on corner exit with the torque split. No rocket science there.
But to me, the EVO feels.....lighter, a little more tossable. On stock struts on an STi you kinda have to be a little more careful and pick your lines carefully. But if you nail the corner just right, the STi can do some amazing things
Once you fix the corner exit push on the EVO, you really do have a monster.
A quick steering rack on an STi is amazing too. Struts/coilovers with more travel makes the car a lot easier to drive (provided they are quality parts) and obviously increase overall grip.
I'm still unsure of which one has the most potential.....either way you can go very far and embarass a lot of expensive cars with an EVO or STi.
Just my thoughts.

I've owned both....
And agree the Evo is more confidence inspiring. It's easier to drive harder faster as it helps to cover up some bad lines too! And the Advans being a 160 treadwear tire is really good.
Nobody asked about gearing for the track? On some tracks, the 6sp STi's have to shift waaaay too much. Whereas our IX redlines in 4th @ 108mph, they can only get to 98mph (assuming stock tires and 7k blah blah). So STi's do a lot of 3-4-5 shifting whereas we can use a ton of 4th in our 5-speeds gearboxes.
Btw, I run Swift springs (and rear swaybar) on the track, and love them as compared to the stock suspension. They are well worth the cost if you aren't ready to commit to coilovers imo!

eggy, bonestock - were you running stock pads? I just did my 1st lapping day with the evo and it drove great (duh) except I got some brake fade. I have some DS2500 pads but haven't installed them yet. Another guy who tracks his M3 was also out with his evo for the first time, with Pagid yellow (track) pads, and he was disappointed in the braking. He didn't get fade, just noted that he had to brake earlier/harder compared to the M3 (no, not because he was going faster...). And yes, the stock tires rock in the wet and held up better than I expected after the track dried out.
Stock brakes. I have never had fade with the stock Brembos but I guess its all in how you drive. I do have some judder now so I need to go bed the brakes in again and hope it will sort out the pad transfer.
I should also add that I have owned a suby as well. A 420hp WRX (with complete '05 STi drivetrain swap). Add in the LGT brakes frt & rear, Prodrive springs and pretty much all the Whiteline suspension bits and I still prefer my stock Evo for track use.
I dont know how to explain it.. the Evo feels like it was made for track use, the Suby felt like it was adapted for the track. Make any sense?

Evos are really good on a wet track!!
Went to the track yesterday...
It was my second track day, and the first time I had only been able to do half-track. Yesterday was the full track so it took a few laps to get used to, but after the first hour I was passing just about every single car on there. It was also a bit wet so I made sure to drive a bit more carefully. There were around 10 STis at the track and I was taking them all...
The only car that gave me a run for my money was a new M roadster...
So... does this mean I'm a good driver? Or is the Evo just that amazing of a car? Or maybe it's the stock Advans, which handled superbly in the rain.
Whatever the case, I love my car and I just want to tell everyone to take their Evos to the track at least once. I haven't stopped smiling since

the car might be good at the track in water, but dont think AWD and those tires are flawless. I've seen many 4WD and AWD vehicles go into walls, or off the road because they drive too aggressively for the conditions
