AutoXers with 50 Trim turbos

What those of you who run 50 trims think of them compared to the stock turbo setup for autocross? Too laggy? Just right? too peaky?

Thanks.

I'm not an owner, but I'd love a 50trim. It's usually noted as the king of the pump gas turbo's.

That being said, with a good tune I'd generalize it as extremely similar to stock spool up with more power. It works well with pump gas, which is why it's pretty popular I think.

Whoa. A 50-trim spools way slower than the stock turbo. It is nowhere near stock spool and certainly not "extremely similar."

DC2, I haven't seen anyone who competes nationally use a 50-trim.

Regardless of what Nats evos have run, I think the topic is worth exploring. Last year, every evo owner that I talked to were running stock turbos with the 1exception of Jan (I think that was his name) who had a 20-G w/ 2.3 block... This year, I know at least 3 cars are running some sort of turbo upgrade, generally favoring the 20G-LT or something similar.

Is there really no way to reduce the 50 trim spool up with the right cam setup? What about the combination of taller gears w/ the larger turbo? 2.3 worth exploring?

I have been casually gathering info on different turbo options and would appreciate feedback from those who have run or currently are running 50 trim setups for autox.

Why not go with a TINY Garrett if spool up/is what your going for, they make plenty of things that will make 400whp peak and spool a lot faster than a big 30R.

Not from what I've read. All depends on your tune obviously.

From AMS's website:
This kit equipped with the AMS 50R turbo will spool up slightly later than the stock turbo and have 400whp potential on 93-octane pump gas. When you add race gas to the mix, in excess of 500 whp is achievable.

AMS 50R Turbo Kit - 475-500WHP
Spool 3100-3600 RPM

Honestly if you're autox'ing I think the stock turbo would be suited well. Just get a tune for it.

50 trim plus 2.3 stroker will have stock like spool. Your power and torque will be equal to each other. 500hp and 500 foot pounds.

I have driven an Evo with a 50trim and I would take a stock turbo ove rthe 50 trim for autocross. The 50trim spools late and when it does spool it hits hard not more linear like the stock turbo. If you run on an open track like Button Willow the 50 trim would be nice to have.

Well my car's not really stock like the sig says, I just haven't updated it. It has the basic boltons and the stock turbo making 330/325.

I'm going to add cams, injectors, head studs, bigger fmic and see how the car performs. I was looking at the 50-Trim for next year.

I want to autocross AND do track days with the evo so maybe that's a better way of putting it. Or would the 20G-LT be better for that mix with the cams and says a tubular header?

the spooling on the stock turbo is around 2800rpm depending on your mods.

anyhow the spool characteristics are less important than when/where you reach peak torque, IMO peak hp is not as imortant. From what I have researched, the 50 trim turbo won't reach peak torque until you hit ~4000rpm. I can tune my current setup to reach peak torque around 3400 rpm. that's far more useful in autox

Are you on the stock turbo?

For some reason, I have been owning BSP here at the regional autocross. I have only stock turbo, springs, a swaybar, and tire.

I want to move to SM for more competition, but im 2 seconds or so behind them.

i would personally stay w/ the 20g LT, w/ a good tune you probably wont be able to tell the difference of when it spools compared to stock, or even the smaller 20G9-5, thats what i run w/ hks 280 cams, and a local stu prepped evo guy said mine spooled quicker then his stock IX did, at that time i had the ams vsr on, but i got rid of that for the stock one and at the next autox my car decided to take a crap, but i noticed a HUGE difference in spool and tourque..then when your on the track just throw some C16 in it and have a good time w/ boost and timing

I can't believe AMS has this on their website

AMS 50R Turbo Kit - 475-500WHP
Spool 3100-3600 RPM

The stock turbo barely spools that quick (usually around 3800-3900) @ 27 or 28 psi with cams, alky, etc...

Unless I'm misunderstanding "spool". Does "spool" to AMS mean Full Boost?

that's why claims of "spool" really aren't useful. Some people refer to it as when it starts to spool, when it hits full boost, where it spools on a dyno, where it spools on the road, based on watching the tach, based on log files, based on 3rd gear, based on 4th gear, yadda yadda.
