Hi guys,

I'm looking for 4 tires in either size, I need R compound. I have always been using RA-1s and have been happy with them. Now I'm wondering, does anyone know (or have a set of 4) that I can buy. I'm looking for a deal here. Where is a good place to buy new, or slightly used? Also what brands are good, I know it's a hard question to answer, but for those guys that tried a lot of brands, which one do you like the most. I've heard really good things about NT-01s and 555R II.

I also have 5 RA1 255/40/17 with 3/32s left, I could trade ya

Maybe try newer tires like the R888? NT-01 is also good, but I haven't seen one person talk about the Nitto 555r II. I use the 555R Drag radial, but I've never seen a review of the road racing ones.

Is there such a thing as 285/40-17? I do not think it would fit. 275/40-17 doesn't fit well due to being so tall, but it can be done. 255/40-17 is a great size.

I have a set of wheels 18x9.5, supposed to be street wheels (I don't drive on the street much) I guess I could use these as track wheels. Then what would be good to go withy 285/35/18 or 275/35/18?

Are you looking for tires to compete in time trials or just practice tires? Don't forget to be mindful of the rules for your class (NASA TTS?) when picking tires. Wider tires means that you can't have as much power.

How wide are your track wheels?

How important is longevity/price?

If you want a big step up from the RA-1, I'd skip the R888. I've run through most of a set of those in 285 30 18 this year and I wasn't too impressed. They are faster than street tires, but not that much.

Compare this video on 285 30 18 R888s to this one on 255 40 17 RE01R street tires, for example. I actually cut a better lap time on the street tires, though I think probably 1-2 seconds of that is better driving and set-up, but still...the R tires should have been 2-3 seconds faster to start with IMO, especially given the size difference.

I've found similar differences at VIR. Street tires are slightly slower than the R888s, but only 1-2 seconds a lap.

If you really want to slice lap times, you need Hoosiers, soft compound Hankooks, Kumho V710s, etc.

toyo R888 is very very good, street legal and strong sides , I use it in drag racing too

Well, my wheels are 17x9.5. I want to stick to R compounds, longevity is not an issue for me, but for instance the life span of slicks is too short for me. As far as NASA goes, in TTS I can go to 275s without losing points. Just after thinking about it, I think it will be enough for me to go with 275s. Now here is another option for me, I can go either with 275/40/17 or 275/35/18, again I was looking for a deal, and my question here - what would be cheaper, and where can I get it? (not to sound like a cheap ***)

On 18x9.5, you'd use 285/30-18 - that's what we all use. I am not familiar with a 285/35 nor 275/35 18s. I've never seen anyone use a 275/35...that sidewall will be too tall just like 275/40. We use 285/30 for a very specific reason.

If you stick with 275, then TRY to do 275/40-17 on your 17x9.5.

I only pay attention to 285/30-18 for V710s and Hoosier A6/R6, but that's not what you want. Regardless, pick whatever tire brand you want and then go to the sites that give the best deals on that brand, such as Tire Rack and Discount Tire Direct.

I suggest either sticking to your 255/40/17's or going with your 18" wheels and running a 265/35/18 or a 285/30/18. 275/40/17 and 275/35/18's are too tall. I had all kind of issues when I tried 275/35/18's. I use 285/30/18's and also had good luck with 265/35 AO48's. The AO48's or BFG R1's are both good.

BTW, I have a garage full of used Hoosiers in 275/35/18 and 285/30/18's that'll I'll sell dirt cheap if you want to test fitment, etc. Hoosiers run a little bigger in section width than any other r-comps though

One in the same, aren't they? The "slicks" are actually DOT slicks, not true slicks. Does Hoosier have a different compound they sell below the A6/R6?
