Does removing heat shields = ABS sensor death?

I would like to increase the airflow to my front brakes.

I don't really have a place to mount cooling ducts because I have a 9 with an aftermarket FMIC the entire front end is filled up.

I was thinking about butchering up my heat shields to increase the amount of air that can get to the rotor and allow the rotor to radiate more heat. Is it safe to dremmel most of the shield away leaving only a small section to protect the ABS sensor?

Does anyone run without the shield (non RS) and not have problems when lapping?

I run without shields and have no issues yet on or off track.

I've heard that the ABS wires and possibly even the ball joint can be damaged from rotor heat.

This has been discussed a lot, so if you want to, wrap your sensors in the heat wrap of your choice and ditch the shield - problem solved.

Heat wrap them and zip tie them away from the rotor and youll be fine. I forgot to zip tie one once and it burned right through it. Not fun having your center diff locked at all times and your abs wont work as well.

I don't have much faith in the reflective tape...... I imagine header wrap would work better. Anyone have a picture of how they did it?

I personally wouldn't run without shielding the ABS line in some way. Using some reflective tape and a zip tie to keep the wire safe seems to have worked for me for the past year.

Mine are going on 3 years and almost 50k now with no issues. No shields and I just zip tied the line to the hub. The zip tie has last 3 years as well.

I lost track of how many track days they have seen.

Put some reflective material on the ball joint dust boot if you take your shields off. The radiant heat from the rotor can cause them to harden.

Run brake ducts and keep the shields on. The shields will contain and direct air through the rotor and release the air out the vanes. Also remove the pad clips which block air from venting out.

You can trim some of the plate towards the rear which will expose the rotor but still contain the air from ducts. the tie rod end will not be shielded but the ABS wire will. It is imperative that the brakes be ducted for hard race track use. You have to be creative to make them "trick", but form follows function. Get ducted air to your vented rotors!

What pad clips do you speak of?
