Evolution Dynamics Pikes Peak Build
thursday updates!!!
so after our first outing on the peak yesterday, we came back to the hotel, some rested up, and a few of us went out to get some supplies.
first up, we mounted the 285 tires we are using on race day. we wanted to get one good practice session in with them to ensure they fit, because we have practiced with 285 khumos which are smaller sidewalls, and the 275 hoosiers which worked.
second, we were addressing issues with the GPS logger, and the engine logger which made our first day of logging essentially worthless. the micro SD card in the zeitronix black box was to large (capacity that is only works with 2gb or smaller), so it didn't record a thing.
second the DASH2 and DL1 box apparently don't communicate well, so all the sensors were wired into the dash, but didn't record to the box. we addressed this issue as well by wiring the stuff to the DL1, and letting the DL1 send the data to the DASH2 to display it.
last, we had another power steering failure while loading it back into the trailer. the issues we are having with it are something most never have
i was a retard and thought it would be cool to make AN power steering hoses. well the high side hose moves a lot when you turn the wheel from the pressure (its like 1500psi). and it was rubbing on the rear motor mount and burst in two seperate places on two seperate occasions. we are having a stock line sent to us ASAP so the issue goes away
crazy thing is in all the practice times we ran, we never had a problem
so today in qualifying, we had all the issues resolved. jeremys first run was safe and conservative, with a 5:02. him and yuri the navigator worked out their pace notes for the second run. by the second run, it had warmed a bit, increasing pressure in the tires, and with revised notes, jeremy laid out a 4:35, placing him 5th behind EvoMs own DaveK (+10seconds behind him), and 3 professional drivers
.
our logs showed that the MAF tune from dallas to here works great, EXCEPT, the duty cycle wastegate tuning doesn't work well
we went from a peak of 28-30psi down to 19psi up here

i figure it has cost us 50-60whp from what we can have here. jeremy said it was very quick regardless, and its been reliable up till now, so i will only be turning it up a little to try and catch those 10 seconds back from davek
cooling hasnt been bad either, but today jeremy stopped short shifting everywhere, so we have hit higher then ideal coolant temps, but still quite a bit short of what we saw at eagles canyon on one of the practice days there. we will be addressing cooling a little more tonight.
the big 285 hoosiers did rub on one corner in the rear, so we will be grinding more out there tonight as well.
thats about all i have for now, as its nap time

Yay for nap time! I just knocked out as much nap time this afternoon as I'd had during the last three nights. LOL
Nice to see you guys right in the mix! Also - good choice on fixing the line before running. A subie guy wrecked a car in the top section last year (or the year before) and rolled it due to some sort of steering issue.
Your boost issue isn't all that weird - we lose about 5psi just coming from Denver.

day 3 has been an eventful day! after day two our windshield cam spotted puffs of smoke in 1st gear on hard accelerations coming out of the hood vent. we werent sure what it was from, but we noticed the oil feed line on the turbo was a little loose. we went to tighten it and it stripped out
we then called everyone in colorado springs at 9 at night trying to find a new one. unfortunately no one had one, so we hessitantly loaded up the car to roll out in the morning.
friday morning, we get to the mountain and ask everyone if they have have any fittings. the most prepared team there (dacia duster from switzerland), had a -4 to -4 adaptor, and after talking to a few people we ground the flare off one end, drilled a inverted flare into it, and sealed it with some teflon tape
worked great, all at 3am in the morning in our trailer. we unloaded the car, put the body work back on and got a run in the second section in. as we were rolling out to start the 2nd run, the power steering hose popped again! since it was late in the practice day, we loaded it back up. not a successful day by any means, but we got a run for jeremy to see it all at speed with GPS data, accelerometer data, in car and out of car video.
tonight we will be at the fan fest showing the car, and tomorrow we will be resting and most likely dynoing the car at revolutions performance to resolve either a bad o2 sensor or a very lean condition at WOT that tuning doesn't seem to affect, yet power delivery is still smooth and good.

Everything is ready to go!!!
this morning we went to revolutions performance here in colorado springs to make sure our tune was good. i had logs showing it was running very lean on the hill, so we cleaned the injectors, bumped the fuel pressure up a little, and turns out there wasn't anything wrong. back on the dyno because of the increase in fuel pressure, it was pretty rich. made 492whp @24 psi. i raised the boost up to 26 and we put down 538whp which is still very safe, and shouldn't change the driving characteristics at all.
we will be up at the mountain at 2:30 am tomorrow! follow the race live through the streaming on http://www.usacracing.com/ppihc
wish us and DaveK good luck!!!!
