929 Evo - 2012 Season Updates
we remove them from all of our TT cars. you have to zip tie the ABS wire to the hub so it doesn't rub on the caliper though. we have made that mistake once, and new sensors are like 180 dollars (but rewiring is free).
I emailed a couple directly, but for those that track their cars - what have you done with the dust shields?
I had some people last year here recommend I remove or at least cut/reduce them to help facilitate airflow. If it weren't for the ABS sensors, I'd have already chucked them. So help protecting that sensor from heat is my only concern.
Opinions?

I believe the intended purpose is as a heat shield, not a dust shield. I've heard concerns of premature balljoint and wheel bearing wear after removing the heat shields, but I have no proof. . .
It would be a real easy test to run 3-5 laps, pit, have an assistant immediately shoot the rotor and caliper with an IR gun. Next session remove the shields and repeat test.

^Kevin actually took my rears off in 2009 when I was still doing TT. The Fronts I've had off since 2008 with the AMS brake duct kit. The inner ring that comes with the AMS kit does a "decent" job of reflecting heat from the bottom joint but it fries it eventually. The ABS sensor actually went out faster. Since then I've covered the ABS wire with the DEI firetube and never had a problem....until I ripped a tire off on curbing...then no amount of fireproofing saves it

In TT, considering we always grid by time and I'd been in TT since 2008, I pretty much knew everyone and I was constantly gridding around familiar people. And I'd know whether I could safely run 2ft off their bumper or to give them room. Plus you have all the download meetings.
With racing, there's just the 1 mass meeting with lots of warnings and a description of the grid/waves as that changes based on class attendance. I'm sure I'll get to know people a bit more, but there's a lot more ruthless driving obviously. There also seemed - at least last weekend - to be a lot more people waaay off pace. That could be attributed to the 1st NASA Midwest regional weekend; although it was already my 3rd weekend out.
I think I'll do a good job 'settling' into a consistent pace, but I haven't to fight for position on consecutive laps or work aggressively through traffic yet so I'm excited for that opportunity.

Thx everyone for the feedback on the dust shields (or whatever they're called). I pulled the pads, rotors, calipers and dust shields off the car last night and laid underneath it and just stared!
I'm going to wrap the ABS lines around the knuckle and if not completely remove the dust shields, at least cut the hell outta them. Then I'm going to try to route larger air duct inlets into the stock bumper to run a larger more direct duct to the caliper. It's something that's been on my to-do list since last year but I just never had time with the car being at Buschur for a few weeks, going to Road Atlanta in March and the car being at the cagebuilder for 4 weeks! I'll post up pics when I've got something worthwhile...

It's a bit backwards (since I posted the race vid from Sat) but I wanted to share the Qualifying vid too.
I went out for practice on street tires as I did not have time to change tires as we were first up! I tossed down a very eventful and sideways filled 1:38x on a cold green track in about 50 degree weather on 5yr old Dunlops on my 3rd lap and pulled in. lol. It was fun; and the car ran for the first time since the cage!
Qualifying was about 2 hours later. On my 1st hotlap I seen the debris flag at T6 - and quickly found the insanely huge OIL SPILL directly on-line from T6 through T10 when I actually passed said spiller on the backstraight still limping the car around. IDIOT. About 5 awesome oil-soaked drifts later for myself, about 6 offs witnessed from other cars and 1 car sitting a full 180 degrees backwards track-center - and just 3 laps - they tossed checker to end quals early. I had just a 1:40x.
The vid below is from Qualifying. Not too entirely eventful as most of the sliding action was in front me. It doesn't want to embed because of some unlucky letter scrambling from youtube...

To make a long story short - I did have a death in the family last week. That's why there was a big gap in posting vids and everything. I'm not sure how much more I'll be able to make it out this year with some of the fallout.
I plan to do my best and still make events to qualify for Nationals as planned but it'll be at a reduced level at best. I thought I'd put the word out to the masses just in case but planned to keep posting & helping everyone here online as much as I can.
Sorry for your family loss bro. I'm in the same boat, i'll be lucky to make it out to 2 or 3 more weekends this year as I have some lengthy sorting to do first. And I JUST finished paying the car off

May end up renting SM rides, we'll see. I keep telling myself i'll never sell her, but if someone came up with a check for 30+k, maybe...
