BFG R1-S Test and Tune
Data point #2. Total of 5 runs for me, 4 for co-driver. Temps were in the low 50's with a solid 10-20mph wind. Site was medium sized lot, concrete, low-medium grip level.
Blanton: 57.035
Me: 53.723+DNF
Blanton: 52.514
Me: 52.789
Blanton: 52.293+1
Me: 52.760
Blanton: 51.315+DNF
Me: 52.285+2
Me: 52.323+2
We rode with each other on each of our 1st two runs. And the grip really didn't seem to come on until Blanton's 2nd run. But it was downright chilly too.
His last run was obviously significantly faster than either of us had gone. He clipped one cone at the apex of the finish. And went off course after the finish lights. Hence the DNF. He elected to pass on his last run so I finished my last two. Sector times showed him faster everywhere. And had he been clean, would have had a solid top pax for the day.
These tires definitely like heat. We never really got much in them, but like most r-comps in sub 60 degree weather, the 1st run is basically a throw away.
We had some issues with inside rear wheel lift and the corresponding wheel hop/ pogo dance that goes on after that. Even though it appeared the wheel wasn't lifting much, it was unloading just enough to cause the pogo. I'm gonna try trimming the rear fenders some more and see if we can get the rear a little lower. Shock adjustments helped a little, but we are losing big time speed by having to wait to get back on the gas at corner exit. (one of the reasons I was so much slower)

I've been hearing a lot of the same thing even from the road-course guys, the R1S's need 2-3 laps just get warmed up.
Have you tried dialing your suspending in using a skidpad? Does the wheel lift on steady-state turns or is it only through transitionals (slaloms)?

Yes, we dialed it in using a 200' skidpad. It is most prominent on slow speed sweepers. But there was a high speed transitional element at this event and it too caused the pogo action. Typically you are not on the gas much, if at all, and certainly rare that you would be hard on the gas in a slalom. It's the action of having the wheel lift and being on the gas that starts the pogo reaction.
That pogo action is killer. I thought I had it dialed out last year, but we were always on asphalt. As soon as we kit the Toledo concrete, we had to be very careful on corner exit. Too much pogo under power and drivetrain components go on extended vacation. Had a similar issue at Nats, too. Hoping I have it taken care of this year, but we don't have concrete to test on

I'm running 900/800. Rear bar at full stiff. I think I may try going to a larger front bar and lowering the rear even further. I guess lowering the front as well may not be a bad idea. But losing the exit capability of AWD is a waste of the cars capability. I have another event this weekend at Mineral Wells. And then the College Station Tour the following weekend. I'll continue to do testing all the way from now up until Spring Nats in Lincoln.

He's in SP AFAIK.
I'm installing my new shocks tomorrow with different rates, just in time for the SD Tour and El Toro Pro. I think the ACD reflash is definitely next on my list. That and getting a set of BFGs to test. I am worried about clearance in the front now that I've got the offset PSRS bushings though. I had to do a fair amount of work to get my Hoosiers to "fit" after the wheel moved forward about 3/4" (those of you that are friends with me on FB have probably seen it). I'm afraid the problem might be exacerbated with the square shoulder of the BFGs. My hope is that when I install the Ciro plates tomorrow, I can move the wheel back far enough that's a non-issue.
