ball joint boot heat shield

after burning through ball joint boots every season, i've finally got around to making some heat shields. i used some aluminum sheets i had laying around. the AMS back plate for the brake duct is a convenient place to mount the heat shield.

Stainkess steel would make a better heat sheild. Aluminum transfers heat quickly. Use the aluminum peices as templates. We utilzed the stock sheilds which have been sufficient.

stainless would probably be better but i just used what i had laying around and easy to work with. if the boots still melt, then i'll switch to stainless down the road. i had to remove the stock heat shield because the AMS brake duct kit has a back plate that force air through the center vanes, instead of flowing air on the rotor surface.

^ I bought the car with whiteline RCK and boots already on. So I just kept replacing them with Whiteline ones.

^ I think a saw that awhile back. Mine took 10 minutes to make for each side

The tie rod boots are far enough from the rotors that they show no sign of heat stress after 2 and half years, so I didn't fell a need to make a shield for them.

I just wrapped mine with reflective heat wrap, so far 2 seasons and no issues.

Haha, that sounds like an even easier option.

I like to over engineer solutions though.

I've used heat wrap on my s2000 before and it works great. Its a little hassle removing the wires and the wrap when I need to pop the ball joint though.

How did you fix burned boot? Did you buy an entire RCK each year just for the boots or were you able to get just new boot replacements? Mine are cracking and buying an entire kit just for the boots just seems wrong. Wish we could get Whiteline to just sell the ball joints without the rest of the kit or even just the boots alone....

Thanks!

This was on my s2000 years ago, but you can probably find better stuff now like heat blankets.
