Official Aero Thread: Wings/Splitters/Canards/Undertrays/Flaps

Thread is dedicated to all things Aero. Installs, questions, adjustments, issues etc

I will start off w/my topic:

As some of you know, I failed my EVO9 wing at the track which really got me thinking about how important aero devices are

I have question regarding my APR GTC-200 wing. I live very close to APR, so I had them review my installation as they provide no install instructions The guys there were helpful but left me lacking confidence in their knowledge of their own products (long story, wont tell)

My wing is set-up at zero angle. I only run our local high speed track (150mph) (Fontana) & curious what wing angle would be best?

Also, what tool are you using to measure. Digital angle finder? Harbor freight as a couple of angle finders

Thanks, Joe

Firstly there already is an aero thread which has a ton of good info, prolly should be stickied but it's out there, so whichever the mods decide to use. But for "developing" a new setup on a car, yes, always start out with 0 or close to 0 because any of the decent aftermarket wings will have 3-4x the downforce that the stock wing. Going too much early on will produce more understeer then desirable and you'll just waste time, fuel, tires trying to figure out why. The exemption to this is if the wing at "0" is actually producing lift because the front edge is too far up from the back edge.

Thanks. Will keep it @ zero

I certainly searched before posting this but I think I found it, started in 07 (should have been titled differently IMO)

Noah, You can dump this or lock it

Thanks

Link to the other aero thread?

We use something flat and lay it on top of the front and trailing edge of the wing and place our digital camber gauge on top of that to measure angle of attack.

One thing that people generally don't consider is that the air bends back down after clearing the roof and so a 0 degree angle of attack is actually more aggressive than you'd initially think because the air isn't hitting the wing perpendicularly to the ground. That being said, if yo just have a rear wing, I would recommend setting it by whatever gives you the most confidence in high speed turns. A bit of understeer isn't a bad thing at all at higher speeds.

Also, a high speed track like AutoClub can really stress the wing mounts. Is the wing bolted directly to the trunk? Is the trunk carbon fiber? I'd highly suggest reenforcing the mounting if so as you don't want a wing to fly off in the banking.

Check what happened to the Cyber Evo, if this was a turn it would have been an accident.

If you do a "search this forum" for "aerodynamics" there's 4 or 5 that focus on just the wing or splitter and such. But the majority of it was discussed in this one as well https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/mo...cs-review.html

Proper wing angle of attack will be whatever angle you need in order for it to work with your complete aero package to cause your car to handle the way that you want it to. This may be flat, or this may be at 12°, depending on what aero items you have on the rest of your car and whether you like your car tail happy or to push just a little bit.

^^^Thanks and makes total sense

In my case, I have stock front aero except for a home made air dam

I ended up setting the wing angle at approx 2 degrees. I just want to make sure I dont create lift rolling into turn 1 Fontana

I agree completely. I personally didnt add aero up until two events ago. It really does make a BIG difference. But I added a 4.5" front chassis mounted splitter and a rear wing at the same time. There are a total of 8 bolts that support it to the chassis. I could carry 7mph more in T2 at big willow. Even with just the rear wing on the freeway at 80mph the car didnt have the front to back rolling sensation when going over undulations.

Added a few NACA ducts to duct air to the transfer case and tranny.

^^^Wow, that is quite the splitter. Looks great. Did you DIY it? What panel is that & how did you attach it?

Will it support your weight?

Like it for sure

Yes, this is a DIY splitter made from a 4 x 8 sheet of aluminite. It is attached to the chassis via welded steel bar stock that is mounted various points on the bottom side of the car. Nuts are welded on the top of the bar stock making for a much easier time when screwing in the bolts to attached the splitter. It is very very stout. I probably could stand on it, but highly doubt it will see 185lbs pounds of downforce in the area of my size 11 shoe, so no point in standing on it and risk warping the aluminite. I know it makes for a cool picture, but not worth it IMO...haha!

is there a thread anywhere that discusses the proper placement/angle of canards?
