My lip is quite officially toast.




I had this plan. I was going to get the bumper painted, get my replacement lip painted, and then get the whole mess clearbra'd in one piece so that the clear bra would help hold the lip to the rest of the car.

Then my clearbra guy smashes my dreams, saying that he wouldn't do the clear bra in one piece, because


I fear that if I don't have some sort of armor on there, I'm just gonna end up in the same place in another year or two.

Has anyone had any success here?

I'm considering epoxy, or maybe drilling holes in the lip+bumper and using small nuts+bolts to keep them together... I dunno. I just want to fix this once and for all if it's possible.

Yep. Me and several codrivers. I need to do the numbers, but last year I'd be shocked if half the runs were clean.

Back in early 2011 it actually looked nice..

Lol. Tell me about it. I have destroyed cones in my experiences during Autox. It's just something that happens when you drive aggressively.

Plan for later this summer is a front splitter, but my car isn't a daily driver or even a street car really anymore. For now, I only have one crack in it which looks repairable. Just don't hit cones straight on...

If I know I'm headed straight for cones cause I screwed up Ill just bail on the run and go around whichever way will prevent cone damage. The crack I have came from a rain event and I was way OC.

The last time I split mine in two, I used one of these self adhesive wire mesh patches and a crazy amount of bondo to put it back together:

So far it's holding up even with all the cones I hit. It doesn't look pretty, but it works.

Kevin's 3/4" styrofoam reinforcement setup that he mentioned in that thread seemed to work pretty well for him.

Another competitor in our region recommended fiberglass reinforcement with UV-cure surfboard resin.

Also, get that tape off ASAP. The longer you have it in place, the harder it is to remove all of the adhesive.

 

Yes, through most of it at least. The two extra pieces that attach to the SE lip are not currently on the car since they've fallen out this year.

So your lip cracked, or your lip separated from the bumper?

Thanks for the link to the other thread, I even posted in it ( ) and forgot about it. The duct tape never really stuck very well, just a stop gap to make sure that it stayed on the car for the drive home. I dropped Kevin a line as well to see if I could get a better description.

I eliminated mine. It's not everyones cup of tee but it worked for me. I would scrape my lip just pulling in and out of my driveway, even at extreme angles. Throw in killing cones at autox and the fact that I'm just starting to rallyx... for me it was best to toss it.

 

Yeah, I've had issues since day one with that damn lip. I think it's a combination of the splash shield, fender liner and fender being tweaked from the rolling. And also the massive amount of cone carnage I inflict

My co-driver hit one a couple weekends ago during arctic conditions and it actually cracked the lip all the way through. So we are replacing it and doing some serious work to get the lip healthy again. Since then, I have basically just said screw it, and let it be.
