If you (and others) don't feel the proposal is enough, then imho, please don't support it.

Personally, we plan on thanking them for at least putting something out there (or providing "lip service" ..depending on your point of view) but in no way do we support 255s... without any other provisions.

Hey Richard, what tire was this? 285/30/18 could potentially be ok but a 285/35/18 or a 285/40/17 would seemingly be pretty rough going(?)

hypothetically, If we were allowed 285s right now, same as the Vet/Z, we'd be running (the same?) 275/35/18 RE71R... so, new plus size wheels for a lot of us and wouldn't the gearing for our friends in the earlier STIs get even worse? ..not that they could fit them anyways.

Anyways, does anyone have a link to the results from last weekend's Cali event, with Heitkotter, Lugod and them?

I think an Evo/STi w/ 285s will make a pretty competitive run at the C5/350z, but will stand no chance with only 255s. This proposal was very shortsighted in my opinion, as a 255 will likely only have marginal performance gains over the 245s we already have. Look at STX... 245s and 255s are used almost interchangeably in that class.

Who's going to nationals in an Evo or STi? If we don't have representation, especially credible representation, nothing will change. That's why it's a shame that the sports cars drove Geoff, Josh, Rob, etc away. I'm just some no-name, Joe Schmo, so if I get my *** handed to me, that's just expected, I suppose.
Totally agree. Like you, I see some of the top new STU cars run every month. They are getting faster each event. For instance, Peter's winning car last year was quite a ways back last event.

Problem for the top AWD drivers on the 2 coasts, is that it cost thousands of dollars to run at the big show, just to prove they were slower. STAC is 2 seasons behind in this proposal, allowing most of the serious AWD cars to bleed out of the class.

The original agreement was AWD was to get more tire allowance, if the C5 and the 350Z proved faster. Thus keeping STU as fastest ST class.

I'm sure it was the 285/30. Which has the same diameter as the 245 we're running now for Evo gearing. The 275 Stone is the tire to have now, which may not be ideal for the STi. But chances are faster tire will come along in 285 eventually. If the vettes can run a 285/40 on 11s later, they'll have a much larger contact patch. The new Rival S and Kumhos are getting faster too. Doug, I'll email you the event results. Not sure if the club want them published for insurance concerns, etc.

285/30 is actually shorter than stock EVO size almost a full inch, so going to that size would hurt gearing a bit (unless you don't care for it)

Hi Fedja, I believe the 285/30-18 is the same diameter as the 245/40-17 that the Evo 8-9s use in STU. We like the lower gearing to help from falling off boost in slow corners.

When the 285/30-18 size came out, the Evos picked up a lot of time over the 275/40-17 used in ESP, which along with the boost allowance justified the move to BSP.

Hey man,

I guess, I was coming from EVO X side of things, but was under the impression that previous ones also had higher OID tires. Glad to hear that 285/30s would work!

285/30-18 has almost exactly the same OD as our current 245/40-17 tires:

235/45-17 : 25.33" Diameter (OEM size)
245/40-17 : 24.72" Diameter (STU size, 2.4% lower top speed vs OEM)
275/35-18 : 25.58" Diameter (1% faster top speed than OEM)
285/30-18 : 24.73" Diameter (2.3% lower top speed vs OEM)

I almost forgot that at one point tires wider than 255 were available for 17" wheels.

I was talking about a 285/30/18 Hoosier, so I'd imagine a 285/30/18 street tire would fit even easier since it would probably be marginally narrower.
