New guy, Is an Evo the right car for me?
New guy, Is an Evo the right car for me?
Hey guys and gals! I know I know another one of these threads right? Allow me to introduce myself... My name is Will (Goingnowherefast on forums) and I live in Southeast Michigan. Currently I own a 300+whp MKV GTI 6MT and a 99' Chrysler Cirrus winter beater/DD. I'm recently out of college and I'm about to land a pretty awesome job at FCA corporate. (I currently work for FCA at the Chelsea Proving Grounds). Anyways I love the GTI to death but its time to make a change to a different car dynamically. I've had it for 5+ years and I am ready to move to a different car with RWD/AWD preferred. I do AutoX, HPDE, car meets, highway shenanigans and everything in-between. I'm a big 4G63 fan and I'm extremely mechanically inclined. The Evo's (Mostly Evo 8/9's) were the poster car for me and now I may actually have the ability to have one. I'm also looking to really learn more about car dynamics from a racing perspective. So do you guys think an Evo will be the right car for me?
Here is my build thread for the GTI: http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190694
Cheers guys!
Build plan for an Evo would be:
Bolt-ons
E85
FP Red
Stock motor
Tune by Strictly Imports Motorsport @Kalamazoo MI
Coilovers
T'E37'S or similar
Brake pads/fluid/SS lines
AutoX swaybar setup (Bigger rear bar)

Howdy Will, I came from the same blood line as you. Had a MKV GTI in 2007, had it for roughly 18 months…did all the mods and a ton of AutoX in it, before stepping into an EVO IX in 2008…. have had it ever since. I've had it for seven years, first as my DD and now the last two years it's become just HPDE only car…. and in seven years I couldn't be happier with the car/platform, it truly is remarkable.
I'm reluctantly selling mine finally to begin building an E92, but I can tell you confidently you won't regret getting into the right 8/9. I guess some people might have horror stories buying the wrong car, which is the risk with these cars… but find the right car, and it'll be everything you've ever wanted.
PM me if you wanna discuss more

Like you've never had fun on an on-ramp? I'm not talking about racing through traffic at highway speeds man.
Thank you much!
Almost all of us that post here in the MS section have all had their EVO's on the track
Some, like me, are just HPDE guys while there is a no. that are truly hard core racers
The EVO platform is very underrated by those not in the know (heck, its a 4 door sedan)
With a few susp & power mods, the EVO is quite the athletic sports car. Wait till you get a taste of E85

Cruising down the highway and there's a sick debadged white hawk eye STi with no wing coming up and goes past. Big turboback exhaust out the back, sounded great.
The race:
First pull was at about 80mph, I was in fourth I would guess he was in fifth. Three honks and we stay pretty even for the first few seconds but he starts pulling pretty steadily after 100. Shut off at 120 he had about 3 cars.
We roll the windows down and he says good run and he asks for a 50 roll so we slow down and get in the right gear. (50"s an odd roll for our cars because its the very top of 2nd gear so I chose 3rd) I'm guessing he was in second. Three honks and he instantly put like 2 cars on me and kept pulling like hell lol shut off at like 110 mph he had about 5-6 cars lol.

So on my way back from the Avengers movie I was passed by a rally blue WRX with bronze rims. I flew by him and he flagged me down to a gas station, We talked and it his WRX had an intake, exhuast and tune. Boost controller, STi wheels, big brakes the works.
Back on the free way we did a 40 pull he got the hit. Put a car on from the 2 to 3 shift (driver mod ftw). Pulled consistantly, Shutoff at 110 3-4 car lead. I didnt expect to win that easy.

You sound awfully familiar with roll "racing."
Like I said, don't buy a ****ing Evo.
Hehehe it sure sounds like it
Good to hear
I've ran a bit of E85 with my GTI and it was amazing. Butt dyno was super happy and it literally eliminated all of my timing pull. Unfortunately we aren't lucky like you guys are and we run out of fueling pretty quick on bigger turbos so I had to say goodbye to ethanol since I went K04 turbo
Take it easy internet warrior.
Doing a slow roll with no traffic at night around is NOT the same as racing through traffic in a dangerous situation putting other lives at risk. The drivers knew the risk when deciding to partake and as long as no bystander is there to be at risk what's the issue? I'm not going to try to defend all aspects of "street racing" but it's not gonna get solved by berating people on an internet discussion board.

FWIW we used to go street racing out in the boondocks. so yeah, i've done it.

LOL, My Wife says I drive so slow in city traffic but put me on an on-ramp or similar & my inner racer comes out
My DD is a Scion XB w/a few susp & intake/exhaust tricks thrown at it. Dont need much of an excuse to throttle my 2.4L Big Block

In any event, we all need to drive a bit more sanely on the road. Take your aggression to the track
