If you wanted to do a beater car I'd suggest a cheapo 4x4 pickup or SUV of some sort with a trailer hitch on the back. Then it could not only serve as a beater to get around in but also a foul weather recovery / tow vehicle.
In fact, I did just that. I bought a high-mileage Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 with trailer hitch on the back for super cheap. The downside is that it gets a super crappy 16 MPG.

but Jeremy's on the right path. I've been contemplating a nissan hardbody as a dd/lowes trip/light hauler. The M5 is just too comfy though!
