Clicking from the rear

I know this is more of general problem, but since a few NTEC members have already heard it, I was looking for some local help.

Here's the symptoms: Clicking during right hand turns ONLY, must be going 35-40+ mph. It is silent during left turns and straight line completely. It doesn't matter if I'm under power or coasting through the turn, the clicking is the same. I have no whining, no locking and no popping, all of which seem common with bad diffs.

At this point I'm thinking axle, but all CV boots are enclosed (no tears), so it's hard for me to determine which. It has been doing this for about 6 months now, and all along I thought it was a vibration issue until some corner workers heard it at my last autocross yesterday. I've actually only heard it a handful of times in the car, myself.

I changed the transfer and rear fluid with Diaqueen about 15k ago, but with all the autocrossing I've been doing lately, it's probably time again.

Any ideas? Thanks!

^Yes, wheel bearing was a thought, but I didn't notice the wobbly wheel symptom you often get with a bad wheel bearing. Then again, I was just changing wheels yesterday, I wasn't trying to shake it. Will do so tonight.

Thanks.

since its been clicking for a while it might be showing other symptoms-
if you could run it up on a rack as soon as you arrived at a shop
and touched the wheel bearings, boots etc to compare the right to the left
after that shaking for wobble

I've had experienced clicking for under torqued wheels and have gone up to 90ft.lbs.

Wheel bearings typically make a howling noise while driving when bad. Clicking noises while turning tend to be axles. Just because the boots are not torn does not mean they are not binding up internally. If you want to check for wheel bearings a quick check would be jacking the car up, running it in the air, use a stethoscope(or a screw driver) and listen to each knuckle. You should be able to hear a loud howling noise if bad. My bet is its prob just a axle binding up.. Hope this helps good luck.

A shaking or wobble would be the hubs out of round. If thats the case there should be a light pulsation when braking as well.

Did you check where you exhaust may be touching you drive shaft? I remember mentioning that on the cruise. Toward the rear end of your resonator.

Yes, and when you told me that I calmed down and stopped worrying about it for six months, heh. However, this last weekend three or four people heard it outside the car and told me it sounded like an axle/diff issue. Like I said earlier, I've only heard it a few times inside the car.

I've had axles go out and the sound is very similar - though that was on FWD's during very low (<10mph) turns. It's just strange that it's so hard to replicate. Basically, sharp-angled, spirited, right-hand turns make the click. Normally, a sweeping right-hander woudln't do it, but on the interchange from US 80E to 635 Southbound (heading toward Mesquite Rodeo) it clicked, and continued to do so until I straightened out. Again, I've tried similar turns to no avail.

I appreciate the help from everyone.

Yes, that's been my experience with those up until my s2000. It had a click in the rear that I could only make in reverse. That car had a warranty so I didn't bother with diagnosing it myself, but they replaced the rear wheel bearings and it was fixed.

Thanks though.

You swerve to the right, the exhaust moves over and pang against the drive shaft. The resonator on the Hi-Power is pretty big. Look on you resonator near your drive shaft for rub marks.

I had the same exhaust and the same sort of noise. I stopped hearing it once I changed exhausts. If that is not it, I hope that it turns out to be something simple.

You were right man. I got under it last night to change the diff and transfer fluid and noticed this. That'll put my mind at ease once again.
