New Jersey/NJ Natives, questions...
Hoboken has changed so much in the past couple of years.
There are so many yuppies it's scary; just look for the Starbucks or Barnes & Noble.
Don't get me wrong, there are some nice high rise apartments for rent now, but expect to pay a nice premium for a parking spot.

dead thread but i will just say that i spent the first 14 years of my life in central nj and moved back (from salt lake city UTAH) after high school. what i realised about nj is most of central and souther jerz are boring *** farm smellying stupid *** towns with absolutly nothing to do. its pretty crazy because you got all the suburbian kingdom stuff going on and then 30 min up (78 i think it was? 22 got you there tooo but took forever with mad lights) i would end up in something VERY diff from my central jerz up bringings and found myself completly and utterly intimidated by life. now that i have my evo im not to sure about moving back. mountain roads are just to fun to leave!
Why NJ
i live in Hazlet,, middle class suburb with homes from 400-700K. I'm on the higher side of property taxes at over 10K for .5 acres. i commute to NYC everyday and wouldn't do it if it wasn't for the ferrys that run from the area. No traffic and an hour commute. this costs close to 8K per year. though Nj crdits you at the end of the year, you have to pay both NY and NJ state taxes. +f your married your wife will also even if they don't work in NY. there is a lot to consider when negotiating a salary in Manhattan.
Overall I am in a good spot close to the Momouth county shore. three major airports in driving distance, Philly and Atlantic City are 1.5 hours away and its a quiet low crime area.
If I was looking to start new I would seriously consider Raleigh, NC. the Research Triangle Park area is loaded with industry and tech companies. (he cost of living, housing, insurance, taxes are very reasonable. Raqleigh is still growing, unemployment is low and education is cheap at the many great schools in the area for residents.
If you really want a change get a job with a large company and look at their job postings for potential locations and get them to pay for relocation.
