Where to stay in NYC

I'm going to NYC soon and I'm wondering if anyone has some recommendations on hotels/motels.

I need a place to stay that is inexpensive, I'm not too worried about the room since i'll be out in the city all day, as long as it's descent i'll be happy.

However, what I'm most worried about is parking. Are there areas I should avoid for looking at a hotel/motel. Any ideas on making the car safer for my short visit there?

Pennsylvania 6-5000.

Seriously, the Hotel Pennsylvania is a nice, inexpensive, and historic place to stay.

Do you know what area you want to be staying in?

Anything in Manhattan is going to be expensive especially during this time of the year (a lot of tourists in Manhattan in the summer); I suggest something in the outer boroughs.

Queens is your best bet.

I lived in Queens for most of my life.

I don't think it will really matter too much since I could just take a taxi or so into manhatten. I'm really looking for a cheap hotel/motel with offstreet parking in a descent area.

There are website that tell you where the cheapest parking garage in the neighborhood in NYC. Google it. As far as cheap hotels, search for the "Pod" Hotel.
