Pennsylvania "Cat" Laws

So i've been looking into exhaust systems and the vast majority are featured as "cat delete", and so I'm wondering... What is everyone doing about their inspections? How big is the fine? Is it possible to be pulled over for loud exhaust? Can you pass emissions w/o a cat? Does a CEL fail you in inspection?

Sorry for the laundry list of questions, but I'm curious what high performance evo owners in PA do with their Catless Evos.

Thanks,
Dave

i just bought a perrin high flow cat. passed inspection just fine.

couple of the guys i know that are catless just make sure to drive less than 5000 miles a year. that way, you vehicle is emissions exempt.

now don't qoute me on this, but i believe the maximum dB limit for passenger cars is 98 dB.

Use fouler how-to. If you dont get an engine check light, emissions should eb a breeze!

To have no cat is illegal no matter where you live. Its a federal law. Where i am in PA we have no emissions. Since your in philly you'll need to pass emissions. Keep the cat on when they sniff you and then put the test pipe on when you're done

If you get caught knowingly not running a cat on the street you can be looking at a fine in upwards of 10k

So you are saying I can pass PA emissions with a catless system as long as I fix the CEL associated with going catless?

yes, the anti-fouler method works. OBD2 cars don't get the sniffer in pa anymore but if they do a visual and see a cat not there you'll fail

I passed with a $13.99 mechanical 02 fix from SpeedElement. I was sweating bullets though wondering if they would see no cat.

I have a resonated testpipe, maybe it would resemble a HFC if spotted by the mechanic.

I've been running catless in PA for over 3 years with a $1.50 mechanical O2 fix (the spark plug anti-fowler method). Just take it to someone you know or someone your friend knows. Or take it to a shady looking shop or a shop without a lift. Worse comes to worse take it wherever and cross your fingers. I really doubt you will get fined unless some state trooper happens to look under there. If anything you just wont pass and lose the 20 bucks.

I found someone in my area to inspect my car and would ignore the visual if i didnt have a cel, which I dont. I have a non-resonated test pipe, this spring I think im going to weld on the heat shield off my cat to hide it even more. But atleast I passed for another year!

What cop will crawl under your car and look....and even if they do and see a heat shield around it they wont think otherwise
