Got stopped

I got stopped this past weekend by an unmarked car in my town. I was probably doing 20, just cruising cause it was a nice day out, and I pull over to the side of the road. I roll down my windows cause my tint is not legal and I wait for him to come around.

He tells me that he stopped me for two reasons:
1. He said that my exhaust was too loud and that it was certaintly an aftermarket item.
2. He noticed the tint.

My exhaust is stock. I told him that I just bought the car and that the exhaust is naturally that sound. I don't think it's loud at all but he said it was. And then I told him that the tint was installed by the dealer and that I had no idea was percentage it was (lie). He let me go after he realized I was from the town he polices and told me to come by the department and get my tint and exhaust checked out (yea, I'll meet you there).

It's a shame that the police in my town have nothing better to do.

Just wanted to share my story.

I feel for ya. SLC is starting to get that way to. I swear if you even get an intake that makes your engine a little louder they will pull you over. They should have something better to do.

Actually That stuff is perfectly legal here.. As long as you have a catalytic converter and didn't disable any emissions hardware. The loud exhaust is subjective, and would never stand in court unless he used a DB Meter.. Don't sweat it, trucks are louder than the loudest aftermarket exhaust (with Catalytic converter) for our cars.. The tint.. Well, Don't go up to DPA or Hempstead turnpike.. you'll definitly get stopped and ticketed.. PLUS they use a light transmission instrument.. The trick is to trim the tint down to 3/4 or 1 full inch, the device won't go down that far and at that point it would be subjective. Also, although its a technicality, the tint on the windows to the rear of the driver (side and rear) can be much darker providing you have side view mirrors.. which we do..

I haven't been near Hempstead Turnpike recently but I know now to stay away. Are you talking about mainly at night or any time of day that they will ticket you for tint? I was actually thinking of investing in an exhaust but now I am thinking twice about it. Maybe I should just sit tight for a bit.

If I were to get an exhaust...what would you guys recommend?

Long Island aint the only place.. over here in the bronx i had to pop my hood so they can check the VIN (good thing they only saw an intake and a purple silicon hose attached to my BOV) and the best one:
COP "Your exhaust has been modified"
Me "Its stock officer i bought just like this", "Just take a look at it"
COP "You better have that checked out"
ME "I will officer"
COP "Im giving you a summons for failing to signal"..

this happens in yonkers a lot too... if driving by yourself most likely you wont get pulled over but when you drive with 3 or more cars they automatically think your gonna street race.. i got pulled over sooooo many times because of this ****....

This is true you dont have to pull over for any unmarked vehicle... although not for the reason you stated. One of the reason being that they must identify themselves as law inforcement in some way else for all you know it could be some You-who who got a patrol light from ebay.
At anyrate i wouldn't recommend fleeing from them if they do flash you over, they will proceed to follow you and call for backup if they really got something good on ya or dont have anything better to do. And you can be asured the backup will be MARKED

Porsche's sports exhaust is pretty darn loud, and louder than the stock Evo. I sure don't see any of them getting stopped by the Police - they run up and down Wilshire Blvd on the Westside in LA. I was going home once in my Toyota Spyder at 2AM (working late at the office). Got stopped by the Police, the reason was no front license plate, but you could sense the disappointment in his voice when he realized that it was not a ricer kid in the car, but a guy dressed in suit and tie with briefcase. I will always hate that guy because he made me go in for a check up (fix-it ticket) and I almost got car jacked a block from the DMV office (it was in DT LA) - but lucky my door was locked and the Toyota was nimble. This was in broad day light at 9AM with people waiting for buses no more than 20 feet away! Scarry!

I got pulled over about a week ago for my tint. I have LIMO tint on the front drive and passenger windows. The officer asks me if I know the tint is illegal and I told him "Why would a tint shop install something if it was illegal, I didnt know it was illegal". He asks me to get out of the car and asks me for my keys. I give him the keys and he freaking uses the sharpest key on my keychain to scratch my tint off. He does it on both front windows, then hands me back my keys and says "now you have a reason to get it removed". That ****ing son of a ***** scratched my window to hell when he did that...

I had to pay $120 to get the tint removed and new tint put on.

im on long island, ny, and never had a problem with cops or state troopers, my car has been pulled over twice with me in it, 1 nassua cop, and 1 state trooper, and a third time when my friend was drivin, all 3 times my CEL was on bc of my header, and i have the intake and exhaust, the first time he gave me a ticket bc my signals in the back were white, both cops saw the CEL too, they flashed their flashlights on it but never said anything, actually my 2nd speeding ticket got dismissed bc the cop didnt write how fast i was going, personally i think the cops round couldnt give 2 ****s as long as your not endangering anyone

one more story, me and my friend in his jetta were racing down 25A/nothern blvd, i was coming down around 100 with my friend a few cars behind me, i see a tinted out undercover car, i KNEW it was a cop i dropped down to 80 i dont know why but going past him at 100 mighta been stupid, and the guy floored it jumping on my ***, he got right up to me, didnt do anything jsut got right up on me, and i slowed down to like 60, and he just switched back over lanes, and turned, i think he was jsut scaring me

i dont think DTs can right up speeding tickets, theres a difference between unmarked cop car and a DT car, well around here anyway

DTs don't bother with traffic tickets. And if you get pulled over by an unmarked car, open the window a crack and ask for a marked car to come meet you. LI is infamous for fake unmarked cop cars.

Oh one other thing, the driver's ed teacher at my school told me a few weeks ago (I chat with him periodically cuz his sons all have ill cars) that Suffolk is going to put cops in marked taxi cabs pending the results of their investigation as to whether or not its legal.

Wow thats horrible man

I recently got me tints but I got a eye doctor to write a prescription leterhead that I can use to show the cops if I do get pulled over for my tint. I havent had to use it yet, but from what I know this will work in my state.
