Philadelphia's Classiest Drunkards
People buy cars all the time and don't realize how much they actually cost to own. The "sounds great" part of my comment wasn't me trying to be a smart a$$, that does like like a good deal. Just wanted to put that out there about the service... Anything with an M attached to it is going to be way more expensive than the average 330i. BMW's can be a real pita, and nothing is cheap. Dan sounds like he's been through the ringer with his car, luckily its still under warranty. I don't care if you get the parts at cost or not. Wait till you have to replace the Vanos (sp) or even all the brakes and then tell me its no big deal. It aint no Evo...
Evo's aren't that cheap to work on either. We're just lucky enough to know people who can do stuff in their garage. Try taking it to Mitsu or one of the vendors (cough CBRD cough) and see what they charge you...

Yea, I got that. I do have a family member who's a mechanic for a BMW dealer. The point is, you drive a top-end car, you're pretty much ready to pay the price. Pete makes a valid point, it can get very expensive. But we're not the average car-owner in here right? You didn't buy your Audi thinking it was going to be cheap to maintain like your Evo and Civic did you? I'm merely saying, if someone has thought about buying something that high-end, I'm sure they could cover the charges

Yea I don't mind shelling out the money for repairs I can't cover. Those chain driven vanos systems have been pretty damn solid throughout their existence which helps my piece of mind. Plus, its a cpo, so its covered till 2017 and 100k. I def don't plan to keep it that long. My e46 was resoundingly well built. Father had a e39 540 for 120k and loved that car.
My main worry isn't even anything mechanical. Its that stupid idrive and all those buttons and gimmicks that may break

i haven't been through the wringer on it. it's just that it had to be into the dealerships several times because the maintanence interval all pop up at different times. it's a bit annoying not being about to perform your own basic maintanence and taking the car in for a simple job like i'm some dumb schlub but the fact that it's all covered under warranty makes up for the hardship. i could just do all the work myself and let the dashlights all go crazy but i don't want to do that.
my wife put like 12k miles on her bmw in 5ish months and the warranty is ending soon. it's going to be $2k to extend it and i fully intend to because with it's track history i'd be a poor man trying to pay for service out of pocket.

You were the one to make the BMW and Evo comparison in you post Pete.
Do you do anything your car other than brakes and oil Pete? On the basis of regular maintenance...oil, filters, brakes, tires, owning an Evo is not any cheaper than owning an M5, especially with the CPO that BMWs have. The money you save in 4 years of the CPO, you've spent the same on an Evo fron day 1 of ownership...point made considerign all parts and services done at the dealership.

Subtle, "you think your better than me because you work on your car more than I do post".
I did a quick search on OEM Evo brake pads vs. OEM M5 brake pads, both are $279....just saying
More like, subtle "Andy, get the freaking car so I can drive it" post.
