you'll have to see the pic... what melted was the divider on the flange, the thickest part of the housing, not the actual sheet metal that splits the wastegate area and the exhaust port. I think one of those un-divided housings (like titek or similar) would be the only way to avoid that but I've heard that without that divider it causes turbulence problems...
I bet the o2 housing originally was not 100% flat surface, exhaust gases were able to heat up that area melting it down. It could also be due to the flange machining- heat doesn't like sharp pointy edges (subtle burnt valve relief CP post)
