sup bishes, hope everyone had or is having a good holiday.

I started tuning the EVO again this weekend after an almost 4 year hiatus and I can't believe how far the tuning sceen has come. when ECUFlash first came out there were 3 programs I had to use to get all the information I needed (EVOScan, LogWorks & dataloglabs), now EVOScan has come so far its all in one program and even better they have this thing called Map Tracer which basically takes the guess work out for you and pratcially tunes the car itself. I know this isn't news for some of you, but it was for me

I was able to get my JDM 3bar (which was sitting on the shelf for a long time) and LM1 to log in EVOscan (so I only have to look at one screen now) and upgraded to Tephra v5.10 and the car is running amazing. I was only running 17psi before, according to the JDM sensor, and getting random knock here and there, but as of last night I'm up to 24ish with no signs of knock or boost creep! Still running the MBC at the moment and its working fine. I'm gonna see how far I can go with the IX turbo and pump gas for now. Then I'll start the ECU boost control and dual maps.

^ baby steps.

I tried V7, but did a 'test flash' of the ROM and it didn't write to my ECU. some of the parameters on my ROM are off from the versions they have out now, so I need to convert to a better supported version and figure out a couple things. V7 has a lot of nice features, the main one I'm interested in is the gear based boost control, but it also has a whole bunch of tables I know not a lot about... yet.

I'm really happy with how the car is driving on V5 and the map tracer feature is amazing. It only took me a couple logs to get the car dialed in, where before when I was tuning it took dozens of pulls and several days. going back out now to crank the boost and see what happens.

V7 takes several minutes to write to the ECU. Its normal as it completely replaces the rom file. Sometimes it can hang because of the size and it will error out. Kind of annoying. V7 has a few nice features but its not always worth the upgrade unless you want the big maps and or speed density. V5 works well and is very stable. Maptracer? Thats the p***y way. I break out the calculator and reference load.

I was doing this **** before they even knew where the ECU calculated load in was... call me a ***** all you want, but Map Tracer is still the ****.
I do still double check the values once and a while the way I used to do it and for the most part Map Tracer is dead accurate.

27.4psi in 4th gear and no knock:

Same stretch or road, just different gears (3rd vs. 4th).I know its not apples to apples, but its all I got from when I started to where I am now:

All thats lets to do now is some 'fine tuning' of the spool up areas. I think I'm good now with the MAX boost, 27psi should be plenty. I don't want to push the IX turbo too far out of its sweet spot. 5th gear is solid all the way 140mph, which is above the top speed I can hit @ NJMP, so I know all I need to do is throw a couple gallons of 100oct for 'safety' and I'm golded. Can't wait to get back to the track and see what kind of improvement I have on my lap times.

I was joking. For a long while Maptracer wasn't working for V7 so I had to do it the hard way. Now I'm used to it.

i figured you were joking, thats why I put that little lol guy at the beginning. sounds like you've already worked your way thru V7, have you tried the gear based boost control yet?

Not yet. I'm still running a MBC and haven't tuned anybody using ECU based boost control. I want to try it eventually.

me too. I'm having second thoughts about doing the EBC now... the hallman is holding boost fine. according to my map sensor I'm getting 23.607psi @ 7k! not sure if thats accurate though, based on what I saw with my GM 3bar back in the day, but I know the map sensor is calibrated correctly as its reading .0003psi with the key ON and engine off. man this stuff is addicting.

I've had a JoeP MBC since my very first turbo car back in like 99-2000 and it's held rock steady that entire time. I came really close to "upgrading" a few times before but what's the point? I need to replace the spring and knob but otherwise it's good enough. I personally have no need for the ECU control at this point as I run the same boost no matter what but I do want to play with it sometime.

haha, I have a JoeP MBC too. now I just keep it in my tool box as a spare in case the hallman ever takes a poop on me. I even got the 'upgraded knob' its pretty baller. Only thing I don't like about it is that the adjustment isn't as easy as the hallman. as far as holding boost goes though, it worked well on my EVO, 1g and VRT.
