Did you get the wrong one? The one that was on there was shaped differently. I think you should be able to just use a C Clip or a cotter pin Tim. The pin you showed is on the 5 speeds for the 8 and 9 but the 6 speed and the 5 speed on the X uses a weird shaped clip that attaches to the stock bushing and sort of flips down and over the shifter lever. It snaps in place lightly.
