Death of a Friend

I was reading through the threads and I see that it's been a rough weekend for us boost junkies. I wrecked my car on Friday morning heading to work. I think it may be totalled but I have to wait for the insurance adjuster to take a look at it.

Here's the story: the road was wet and I was driving uphill through an S-turn. I was at the apex of the left hand sweeper and put the power on when the back end gave way. I went head-on into the hillside and the Airbags deployed. I've been told that those things hurt when they "slap" you in the face and I can tell you that it's true. After I hit the hillside it rotated another 90 degrees and ended up partially on the curb facing in the opposite direction that I was originally heading. I've always hated the Pirelli P-zero's that were on the car when I bought it; they're a hard compound tire and sacrifice grip. I was planning to buy some better tires this summer.

Some guy that was passing by called 911 and called out the full force of rescue workers. There were two fire engines, two aid cars and an ambulance. I wasn't hurt, just a blood blister on my right palm and a contusion in my left forearm. I didn't go to the hospital at that time. The Sheriff's Deputy that responded was pretty cool about the whole thing. He asked me how fast I was going and I said that I didn't look at the speedo. He didn't give me a ticket though so that was good.

Tomorrow I going to the wrecking yard where he was towed and get some pictures; I'll try to get them posted. I feel like I killed my best friend. When I got out of the car, I just stood there in the rain looking at all the damage and steam rising from the engine; I almost cried.

My wife was never in favor of me getting my EVO but she was still sympathetic about the whole situation. We've been planning to buy another house this year so I'll probably wait until after we do that before buying another one. Maybe I'll buy an old beater for now and wait for the EVO X to come out. I bought this car on 4-Jul-05 and it had 20K miles on it. I put 21K miles on it since I've had it. We didn't even make it to our first anniversary. Man that sucks.

I'll keep you all updated on how things work out.

All things considered, I was pretty lucky that I didn't get hurt worse. I've done my own crash test and I fully endorse the 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII as a safe car.

One thing I gotta say; SPEND THE MONEY ON GOOD TIRES! It doesn't do any good to have a car that's putting down 300+ WHP if the tires are gonna give up their grip. Wet or dry you MUST be able to trust your tires.

I'll get off my soap box now.

I'm sorry, that's awful!! I've wrecked cars and it always felt like I'd hurt a loved one. If it were a babied Evo.. well, yeah. Tears.

It's been a bloody week!!

Ouch Ron! Well at least your alive . I have broken the back loose in the wet on the Advans...incidentlly on the way back from the St Helens run on the 148th exit off of 520E. I was able to get it back under control with a combination of steering and gas (don't want any brakes here since this will only lock up the back worse).

I figure the advans have one summer left in them (i have seperate winter tyres)...so next year I'll be looking for new summer tires.

Yes they leave Mitsubishi with the Advans on. Some dealerships however go and put different tyres on as a "package" (which they charge for). When last I was down in Miami saw a dealership that had a new Evo on the lot with Pirelli's on it.
