hey ralph,

probobly dont know me, but when you get down there, would you ask the staff at WORKS a question? Oliver has a couple video's of Tarzan Yamada doing the Redline time attack... if you get a chance, could you ask him or one of his employees to mail me a copy so we can include it in his interview on the West Coast Import Tour DVD.. if not - then its all good...

thanks! - definately recommend taking hw 101 coming back up north - cut through crescent city then through the redwoods into grants pass then back up north... one of the craziest, FASTEST roads on the west coast. its a blast to go through that area...

thanks man, have a safe trip!

hi Kory - you're smoking crack, of course I know you! We've talked in person plenty of times ... however, your request is a little too late, I came back from WORKS this morning and am back in Seattle now, sorry . I'll ask Oliver next time we talk on the phone though.

ok , here are the promised dyno graphs:

1) stock baseline (right after I bought the car)
2) when it got to WORKS
3) when it left WORKS
4) difference before/after WORKS trip

obviously, I still have a ways to go to hit my goal of 400WHP (sigh). it's also clear where my unhappiness with the low-end comes from (lost almost 35 ft-lb due to later spool up). I think the current mods have some gains left in them though:

1) the header is crap (I'm guessing +15 HP if replaced with a Borla & earlier spool)
2) the boost is ~2.5 psi lower than it was before, needs tweaking
3) I started to get the dreaded P0300 code (random misfire)

the misfire could be due to a boost leak (would explain lower boost pressure too), old plugs, or having reached the limit of the stock ignition system (seems unlikely though). it's going to take some time to tweak everything to work together smoothly.

What mods did you have in the middle graph? That looks like a really nice torque curve!

the middle graph shows the before and after from this round of mods (I think the list is posted somewhere earlier) ... oh yeah, and I'll do water injection before I do a stroker, that way if the engine blows up I can do the stroker later

Hey Ralph,

It was great to have you here at the shop. This morning, in talking with Pete, we took some time and looked more closely at the Dyno info and the logs from the road tune. We think that the HP lost in the header is also a large component of the loss down low in the rev range. It will be interesting to see the difference between the Borla and the Megan headers, once you get that sorted.

We will be in touch shortly. Thanks again for your visit and we look forward to seeing you in the future, not to mention the next rocket motor test!!!

Sincerely,

Oliver Simons

Hi Oliver - thanks for "dropping in" - and really thank you (and everybody else at WORKS) for pulling it all together. Doing a major mod like that under time constraints is always challanging, and you guys certainly went the extra mile to make it happen, and make me feel welcome while I was there!

quick update on the P0300 problem: I burnt all the remaining CA crap gas and filled her up with 93, reset the SES light and it hasn't come back yet. maybe that's all it'll take - cross your fingers!

ok, long term update: HIN went well, T-shirts, hats, etc. dissappeared quickly and all but 4 of my WORKS brochures were snatched up by people.

The P0300 was gone for a while, but came back again - so it's not just the gas I guess (I've been filling up on 93 from the same place ever since I got back). I think I can actually hear the misfires when the car idles, might be time for new plugs/wires and maybe an ignition amp.

Also, with the air getting colder my old nemesis the boost-spike is back, I hit 1.9 bar (28 psi) this morning - awesome fun since I was in 2nd coming out of a turn and got a serious push of power which made the rear step out . Probably not all that good for the engine though ...

I put in an order for a full race header, and am waiting on a replacement for my upper IC pipe (which is dented badly) - once I get that hardware sorted I'll do some serious logging and try to figure out the tune.
