They applied a paint sealant on the car with warranty on that procedure. The car had sat on their lot for about 1 year, and so without preparing the car correctly they just sealed it without removing any contamination. I have a fairly bad case of orange peel on the car. The detailers around here say it's contamination (needing clay bar or Maguires), so I took it back to the dealer who decided that they would need to wetsand it because they say the problem is "with the paint". I haven't heard what they think is the actual problem (their receptionist gave me the news) and I have had trouble reaching them. I don't know what they think is the problem, so that's why I worry about my paint warranty if I don't do as they say. I hear that wetsanding these EVO X's are not a good idea due to the small amount of clearcoat on them and that they can be easily burned or the clearcoat made so thin that the UV rays cause fading, etc. I've been trying to research what to do...don't want the dealer to destroy my car's paint. The dealer also wants to remove the $800 clearbra I had put on the car to do the work, and they say they will replace this. My mind keeps thinking on why would they do so much work at such a cost to them if there wasn't actually a paint problem. I just don't know what to do...too many options and I have too little knowledge on the topic.

Yes, my girlfriends gave him the name Fabio! I have the Phantom black paint.

I have graphite grey X MR... i don't think it shows imperfections at all like my Rally Red and Phantom Black cars did. Those were horrid.

Ah, I didn't know about the sealant. Did they use Perma Plate do you know? Also, if you're talking about real "orange peel", the source of the problem is in the clear coat. The only way to fix it is to cut and buff. Yes this process will remove the slightest of clear coat but it is the only way to smooth out that imperfection. If you're worried about it, tell them to try out what the detailers say about clay bar or what not and see if that gets better. Doesn't hurt to try. If that doesn't work and what you say is orange peel is still there then you have the "other" option. lol.

If you really want to get rid of that orange peel, you can always finely wet sand and cut and buff the entire car. But I would really be careful about doing that. Especially from a dealer. You will have to worry about some 18 year old kid with a power buffer on your 40K car. Not worth it, live with it I say.
I'm not that picky, really. I was fine with everything until the two detailers (who I know) both told me to go to the dealer and ask to get the problem (that they saw) fixed...both also saw different solutions to fixing it (clay bar or Maguires). Then all of a sudden the dealer puts it into their computer that I have to bring in the car to them as I have a big paint problem...now I'm trying to deal with all the aftermath...and potential warranty issues. The dealer says that they have someone from another company that they bring in to wetsand, so it isn't the actual dealership who would do the fix...don't know if that gives me any comfort.

And, no Super Sport mode yet...it's winter here in Canadaland. Fabio's hibernating (for the most part) in the garage. I took it to the dealer for the first oil change...OMG, did I ever get ripped off...$204.52 for the oil/filter/gasket change. When I argued the bill, they told me, "you have a racing engine in that car you know"...I just about fell over! I got charged $25/litre for oil!

Anything dark, the clear coat stands out. At least to my eyes it does. Red is not so bad, but it is by far the worst when it comes to sunlight fading and being able to tell the difference.

Don't know what they used, but it's not a wax for sure. Apparently the dealership I go to owns the "tri-care" company who does the paint sealants for many dealerships (not only Mitsu)...no one really knows the formulation. I actually love the sealant they put on...shiny, and no need to wax the car...water just beads off and it's amazing. My arm is sore after waxing the Sebing to a lovely shine, but no need to do anything with the EVO.

What is meant by "cut and buff"?

Sorry. It's a term we use in the industry to make the clear coat shinier than all hell so the customer is happy. You wetsand the clear (it makes it a dull white color), after that, you use buffing compound and a buffer until the clear shines back to a perfect look. Maily used to remove dirt nibs in the paint or any imperfection in the clear coat.

How much clear coat is removed? Look at my pics of the EVO and the Sebing...Sebring has more of a mirror shine and the car is almost 13 years old. EVO shines, but doesn't have the true mirror finish.

Blondie departing Greece pic FTW!

Oh wait, I was suppose to look at the cars. Silly me.....

I can't imagine too much is removed if done right. Hard to put it into a measurement but maybe .1 or .2 mils considering you have about 2 mils of clear.

JTFC!!! That is not ripped off, that is straight teh butt sechs rape! I would hate to see what they would like to charge you for 15k, 30k, 60k!

I would literally consider that theft, and see what you can do by contacting Mitsu corp. That is ridiculous, and if that is what Canadians in general can expect then it is any wonder how dealers have customers bringing their cars to them!

Yes, it's highway robbery here in Canada at the dealerships...actually any dealership here. They can charge what they want or so they say. And it's worse for high end cars like the EVO, as they know that you probably wouldn't risk screwing up such a car by taking it somewhere else...very few people here have seen an EVO never mind worked on one. I just cannot imagine someone putting in the wrong oil or it draining out or something horrible like that.

It's the oil price they charged me that makes it so outrageous. I can bring in my own oil next time, right? It has to be Mobil 1, 100% synthetic, or I mess with my warranty or so they say. I'm going to call Mitsu and see what I can bring in to keep my warranty. I notice that there are a few different 100% synthetic oils here by mobil...one is slightly more expensive than the other....about $11 CAD per litre.
