Looking to purchase and Evo what should i look out for?

hey all i have been building evo conversions (4-6) for many years now but the opportunity has fallen into my lap where i can get into a evo 8/9 (looking to spend no more then 18-20k) now i have built the old cars for years but when it comes to buying a evo off a lot thats another thing. so anything i need to look out for? hidden this or thats the dealer might try to distract from? any help is appreciated thanks all!!

FYI i have to buy from a dealer. For financing.

thanks that helped a bit. i liked the radiator tip. but the rest seems to be common knowledge. as i said above i have been following evos for wow 11 years now lol **** i feel old, anyway if anyone has some good stuff that i should look out for let me know. im going to look at this one tomorrow

http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/ctd/2267963534.html

two things that threw me off and made me create this post.
1. the price seems low
2. the online reviews for "Trend Imports" they were very bad.

if you need financing, why don't you try a bank or credit union?

Honestly, if you've been building conversions for so many years, you should know what to look for. Internals underhood, belts, matching parts (headlights, tails, seats, wheels, etc.), under the car, body panels, etc. Ask if the brakes have been changed (by them or the original owner), then after they answer you, ask to inspect them. If you can have the motor pressure tested that would also be good.

It might be worth pulling the drain plug quickly on the tcase, rear diff, and tranny. that could show you what the fluid looks like (chunks of metal, coloring), how much fluid pressure seems to be there, and then when you top off the fluid from the drain hold you would know how much fluid goes in, which would give you an idea if it was close to spec level.

Good luck!

*edit - FYI, in the local marketplace: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/no...lution-ix.html Price seems a bit on the high side, but you could likely talk the owner down.

Evo's are hard to find in good shape. Good luck with that. If I were you I would get a loan from a credit union and buy private party.

Yeah, you can still get financing for buying from a private party. Well, I at least know Credit Unions will.

If you can find it from a reputable dealership thats not a bad way to go either, I bought my evo IX from Burien Toyota back in 08 and I noticed the pads were Marginal on the inside but ok on the outside. Brought it back told them the issue they fixed it no prob. But definatley stay away from the Seauto or other used car lots.

this

used car lots are worse than private sellers because they make a living off selling used cars, they're just after profit. private party will know about the car, probably have service records, and usually tell you the little nuances about the car.

if you can get the right price, dealership is best because they will give warranties of some sort usually

My roommate is selling (but hasnt posted anywhere about it) his TB IX SSL w/ 39k miles. It needs to be cleaned up quite a bit as its been neglected for the last year since he bought his "other" toy.

If you need to go through emissions youll have to find stock exhaust cause this has an old custom exhaust from English racing and no cat. Also rear o2 sensor is bad, got hit by a tire scrap from a semi, but that can just be turned off at ER which Im pretty sure we can get done for free (OG POS hookup).

Anyways, it has a few mods but has always been at 19-20psi and still on the stock clutch. I think he's looking for something in the 19k range.
