Tires question

Ok this may be a retarded reason to start a thread but whatever..

What tires do you guys like on the Evo, for those of you who drive all year long in the PacNW? I don't really want snow tires, and I plan to get a set of wheels and dedicated track tires this spring for it so just something that drives good, handles the rain/snow reasonably well, etc.

Sounds like you need a high performance all-season tire, which doesn't do anything that good.

Check Sumitumo, I think they have a good one.

I'm happy with mine so far...Continental ExtremeContact DWS. No idea how they do in snow though

For all seasons, I am really happy with the new Kumho Ecsta 4x. Great warranty, great price. Can handle the rain, cold, and even light snow.

For summer, there are lots of options depending on your use, but Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Specs are loved by many a evo owner.

The right answer is no singular tire does everything well.

If you want a performance tire, buy a performance tire.

If you want a snow tire, buy a snow tire.

Jack off all trades, master of none is what you're looking for :P

Buy an extra set of winter wheels and get winter tires.

Then all you have to do is get a tire that does OK in the rain and great in the dry. For me I just slow down when it rains.

My 2 cents John.

I know people that have had good experience with Blizzak's for evos in the snow. I don't think they are cheap, but neither is sliding off the road into a guard rail. Don't cheap out on tires.

I think OP was looking for an all-season tire, he said he didn't want dedicated winters. I went Allseason because i DD and they will last me more than a year or year and a half like a high-performance tire would

I think regardless of what he was asking the answer is the same. There just isn’t one tire that handles the variety of seasons we get here in the PNW.

We get: Heat (not excessive), rain (lots), snow (every so often) and ice.

The OP already states he is getting dedicated track rims/tires (but doesn’t state the type of track driving or frequency he will be doing) so the answer is the same. Use the dedicated track setup as your "summer" setup and get summer only tires that can handle at least 4 months of daily use (Z1 star spec are a good choice) and put dedicated winter tires on your stock rims (I use Blizzak LM25's and could not praise them enough).

If I had a family or girlfriend that would be missed in an accident then this would be mandatory. Currently it’s just because I’m eccentric.

I agree with Ryan.

My wife's car has all seasons (goodyear RS-A's) for the summer and Blizzaks for the winter. I'll get her a nicer set of summer/rain tires after these wear out. You can blast 80mph in a downpour and not hydroplane. It's awesome.

I run Hankook RS-3's on the car most of the year. They work good with the rain. For the winter months I bought a set of Toyo Proxies All Seasons rated for mud and snow. I don't feel I need snow tires due to Portland not getting much snow. Plus I bought them used with a few thousand miles on them for $300.

These John!!! These are great tires and you cant beat the pricing. We sell the crap out of these at Audi and the owners love them! They do amazing in all Dry, wet and snow. The only complaints that we mostly hear are that they have a soft sidewall, but it is an A/S.

I think everyone is on the same page. I've never owned a set of all season tires all these years. They don't perform well enough in the snow. Track tires for track, a good set of ultra performance summers for daily. And winter time just run winter/snow tires.

Try a set of Pirelli P Zero M&S or Conti DWS in the snow and you might change your opinion. The Pirellis I had on my evo a couple years ago and the DWS are prob the best thing you can get for an A/S just shy of a winter tire.
