FWD to AWD

Hi Everyone, I am thinking of turning my FWD Sporty to AWD. Crazy...I know. Expensive? Probably. Worth it? YES!

I always wanted an AWD Sport but when we lived in Phoenix at the time we had no reason to get an AWD. Now that we live in the PNW it would be amazing! Our FWD does pretty good with proper driving, good tires etc... but I would like to have the option. So, I am thinking of piecing all this together.

Essentially I'd need:

Rear Axles
Transfer case
Rear Differntial
Rear AWD Hubs
Drive shaft
Needed Electronics, modules, knob, etc..
Probably the AWD version rear subframe
Other odds and ends I'm sure....

I had thought about buying a wrecked OS from Copart as it would come with everything instead of piecing this together...

Thoughts? Would you do it if you could?

sounds like a massive PITA and time suck (unless you're REALLY bored LOL)

why not just buy a used AWD for a winter beater - they're less than $10k?

Good point, I've got time lol but I may buy a wrecked one of copart the more I look into it. 2012 + OS can be had for dirt cheap. We will see though...It's odd but I really love my OS and how the build is coming so want to turn it into it's fullest potential!

Maybe I'll just LS swap it

@Hamman Interested in any updates. Too bad USA cares about the environment (much more that most other countries) and Mitsubishi will not bring this beauty to the USA...

Talk about a dream come true 6Spd manual AWD Diesel

@Hamman I hit you up on gmail last week and you shared me some updated pictures.

How about creating a LSD insert with tapered bearings that touch the spider gears? To us some LSD action. I can be you guinea pig if you like ha ha

Like you said you will be investing a lot of time and effort and costs to convert. Personally I would sell your FWD and find a descent AWD unit. It will save you time and effort and probably be cheaper. Unless you just want a heap in your garage to wrench on for several months.

EU is more concerned than US. We should be concerned because we probably contribute the most to pollution. Be nice to think the wealthiest country in the world should be the cleanest too.

@whtrice Agreed! But the diesel emissions world wide seems to be less restricted.

The most efficient USA spec Gasoline Engine (2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2WD2.0 L 4J11 AV-S6 140HP Gasoline) OS gets 27MPG combined.
The most efficient non USA Spec Diesel Engine (2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2WD 1.6L DI-D 6MT 114HP Diesel) OS is 51MPG combined.

I personally drove a diesel passenger car MK4 Jetta for 13 years prior. You know the slow efficient pre dieselgate platform. I am missing that with $4 per gallon gasoline at almost half the MPG of Diesel.

Hey guys thanks for the info, so my new plan is actually to LS4 swap it in the next year perhaps. I would like to keep it FWD mainly due to the fact 1: already own the car outright, 2: I don't have a drive shaft tunnel and 3: well, why not? LS4's are cheap, paired up with a 4T65 trans, woof. I have dreams of making a low budget CUV pre-runner. I already have the entire back half gutted and starting a tube cage SO keep you posted!
