But I just hadn't had the opportunity to buy the software and cable, and then teach myself how it all works without causing further damage to things.

I'm enlisting some professional help next week, because I am 100% stumped on what to do moving forward. And of course I can't post up the video I took from my phone the other night to show what it's (not) doing.
I hear yah, time is a luxury. One other thing that crossed my mind that you could verify is compression. I also see you are running a 4g64 block, I think the cam timing on those is a little different then a 4g63. If you haven't gone down that rabbit hole I would suggest you look into it.

I was going to check compression tonight after work when I have the chance to go rent one. Also going to get my battery on a charger to make sure it's fully charged. In regards to the cam timing, the guy that did the machine work on my car is running a 4g64 block and an evo 8 head in his eclipse, and I followed his guidelines on how to set the cam timing with the AEM gears I've got.

Ok good, I just wanted to make sure you were aware there is a difference.

Thanks for lookin' out! I had asked a LOT of dumb questions to the engine builder during the entire process, and I'm sure he got tired of seeing my name pop up on messenger lol.

Thanks! I'm excited to get the strut tower bar back in place so I can see it all together. Same with getting good shots of the brakes

WELL!! SHE LIVES! <3

I wound up taking it to a shop to figure out exactly what was wrong and preventing it from starting. It was a fairly straight-forward fix, and I'm glad I had them go over everything. Turns out, the timing was a tooth off, and the crank position sensor was bolted to the block with the wrong bolts, so it wasn't reading correctly. Definitely all my own mistake, especially the bolts. I tried my darndest to keep things labeled in bags during the teardown, but I had a couple people helping me, and this wasn't the only case of something being mislabeled or not labeled at all. Anyways, I'm glad they found the issue quick and got it fixed! They're going to do a final check-up on everything else today and check for leaks and all that. If that all goes well, I get to pick her up and drive her home tomorrow and start the break-in process!

It's a fairly short clip, but this is what they sent me last night at like 5pm. Needless to say, when I got it, I cheered and did a happy dance in my kitchen for like 5 minutes; I was REALLY excited.

Evo timing is a bit of a pain lining up to marks on the valve cover instead of center line like on DSMs. And the way the cams want to twist is always a pain in my ****.

I did put this up on thingiverse for people to print their own alignment tool since its such a pain to do without one. And its a perfect functional use for 3d printing.

3D printing is super neat. Not sure I'm creative enough to justify the cost of a printer, but it's always neat to see what people come up with. I do have an alignment tool I used though; it's a blue one and can be seen in some earlier photos. I'm pretty sure that it was just an honest mistake on my part, what with this being my first big build and my first DOHC car.

We all had to start somewhere

Back in 02' I lost a balance shaft belt on my Laser taking out the timing belt and bent a few intake valves. When I put it back together I had one cam 180 deg off missing a simple detail. It would crank but just spun freely with zero compression. Whoops, but never did that again.

That's exactly how I feel about everything that came up yesterday: oops, but I've learned the lesson and won't do it again. Overall, I feel great about what I was able to achieve on my own.

Glad to see that the issues are small ones and this build has taken one step closer to being completed. Making mistakes is the only way to learn and improve. I look forward to more updates.

Update for y'all! So the shop that was looking over everything kept the car for a while and did a full checkup on everything I did. They found a few other minor things that I overlooked or didn't have sealed all the way. All minor stuff, but definitely makes a difference. Plus now I have some peace of mind that a local shop that knows Evos really well has given her a clean bill of health. With that all said, this past Friday, I got to take her home and do the break-in tune. I'll need to get some videos of how she drives once she's broken in and I can do the boost tune, but I did manage to get a little clip of her idling after she warmed up and did a few pulls.

Needless to say, I had a blast doing the break-in tune, and am excited to see how she feels once we're able to turn up the boost. As of right now, she's holding steady at 16psi, and is a lot of fun. The whole time during the break-in tune, I was giggling like a kid in a candy store, and I'm sure the tuner thought I was crazy. But alas! She is home, and it feels so good! Now she just needs a good bath, and for me to button up a few other little things.
