[Alex] 2.2 L Evo VI RS2

Good morning to all

I’m starting this modest built thread, I want to share some experience et get some feedbacks from you all. This would surely help me to avoid some mistakes.

First, I live in France so be kind with my English 🤣

This is my second account in the forum, I’ve been here for many years, I have this car for like 12-13 years now.

Car is basically a 2000 LHD Evo 6 RS2, which is an « in between » model between GSR (which, afaik, doesn’t exist in LHD version), and the RS which have been made for Rally GrN and GrA competitions in Europe.

I have basic AC, electric windows and of course PS. No ABS nor AYC/ACD.

Building plan :
  • Assemble new engine (I have a JDM Evo 7 second engine for this purpose)
  • Rear axle rebuild (shocks, bearings, all bushings) plus fuel tank rebuild (new filling tube and hose, custom built twin pumps system and fuel system)
  • Front axle rebuild (same as rear axle plan)
  • New engine swap

New engine is nearly done, still a couple of adaptations and detail to finish.

Nothing very new, basically I’ve followed this very handful forum guidance, in particular those from Abacus’ thread.

I want to underline the fact that this forum was, and is still, an incredible source of info for evo’s building.

Specs :

Evo 7 engine 2.2 stroker with eagle 94 mm crank and Manley I beam 150 mm rods.

Manley 85.5 pistons, static comp ratio 9.2 with decked bloc, head and OEM mls headgasket.

King bearings

ARP studs

Balancing shaft delete

kiggly 12 teeth crank wheel

Head is ported, and machined to accommodate GSC +1mm intake and exhaust valves. This was mainly done with the aim to get « clean » head ports.

Kiggly HLA regulator

Kiggly valve springs and retainers

GSC S2 camshafts with AEM adjustable pulleys

Reversed cam shaft housing

EGR port blocked with 1/8 NPT plug

Magnus sheet metal intake manifold (last version with velocity stacks)

S90 70 mm throttle body

Radium fuel rail, FPR, fuel damper

Custom made pump bracket with two AEM 340 in tank pumps

8AN feed and 6 AN return PTFE lines.

PCV / crankcase pressure system is planned as follow : I’m currently running two saikou michi OCC with the oem system. I really like to get vacuum through the system.

Next engine would be fitted with a custom OCC box with three inlets (rear VC 10AN without check valve, side VC 6AN and an third Line (6AN) for the block balancing shaft inspection hole. One outlet would be plugged into a compact electric vacuum pump which would maintain the whole system under vac.

I forget a bunch of things, I’ll try to update step by step.

Some details to look at and « solve » about this engine, I take the benefit to still have it out of the engine bay :
  • test my homemade alternator adjustable arm (getting rid of the OEM tensionner)
  • Rebuild and put the PS pump back on the engine, in order to check which accessories belt length is needed (made also a new water pump pulley)
  • Figure out how to position the dipstick tube according to the intake manifold.
  • Figuring out vacuum lines routing, personally I really dislike having too long vacuum hose, and ports provided with the Magnus manifold are all positioned backwards.

For the moment I’m still « working » with the nearly stock engine (upgrade with bolts on only)

Short term plan is to make my Syvecs S6 ecu working with this engine.

I made a conversion harness and add a few sensors (3.5 MAP, IAT, engine oil press and fuel rail press)

Now I’m working on a new « MAFless » intake and design an intake box.

I also need to adapt and improve UICP to make it fit nicely.

One of the issues with those cars is the brake cylinder which is fitted way more to the left side on those LHD evos (basic RHD model has no issue obviously) the the later.

It has always giving me headache as you can’t find any pipes well designed for those cars. I was not very happy with my previous install, and take the opportunity (I need to add NPT bung for the IAT sensor and the bracket for the Tial VTA bov) to make a new uicp. Headache will come back later with the new engine, as the new intake system will make things worse.

It’s more or less the same issue with the intake, parts are mainly design for later Evo 8/9 and always need some adaptations …

For the UICP I will probably remove the whole SAS system in order to get a little bit more space and push the wire loom more to the VC side.
the 90 degree coupler from the TB is fine, I’ll need to buy 70 mm straight aluminium tube and slightly bend it, and the adjust / make the junction with the lower part of the HKS piping I’m currently using.
