Whining noise whilst spooling
Hi all,
I am new to this forum and am just after a bit of advice as not a lot of people I know have experience with evos. I got mine in November last year and its been fine, until the other day randomly I developed a whining noise when the turbo is spoiling - also doesn't pull as well as before. Lets say about a 15% reduction of what it is normally like. I'm getting mixed opinions of boost leak, turbo is going etc. There is no smoke or smell - but I have had a look at the turbo and it seems to have about 2mm play which I read is not good. Can anyone offer a bit of advice of what they think it could be/to look for? Sorry I am a bit useless and don't know much!
Thanks!

Hello / Welcome aboard the boards @Evo8_Jess
As noted, a boost leak test is in order as well as confirming the shaft play in the turbo (possible worn shaft bearings)
Cheers,

That being said, there is a limit. 2mm is excessive. Have someone rev the engine while you listen under the hood to see where the sound is coming from. Bad journal bearing turbos can sound like a kazoo.

Yes Sean, all turbos have a tiny amount of play. I kept it simple for OP. I assumed he had a stock journal bearing turbo. If I feel 0.5mm of in/out play, I will rebuild because thrust plate is starting to wear. As for 2mm, that's about the limit for ballbearing turbos. Here's a journal bearing turbo with about 2 mm of play. Notice how the exducer made contact with the cover?

Also, once JB turbo is rebuilt with new thrust plate and collars, my turbos have zero play. If I put my weight into it, the entire turbo will move when I push, pull, and force wheel sideways. That's my experience with rebuilding turbos. Let's not get into another pissing match because I have plent of turbos at home and don't want to waste my time recording and uploading.

If you truly have zero/immeasurable play, they're not going to last very long as there will insufficient clearance for oil to enter the bearing.
