Points system flaw: Can points expire after awhile please???

We were discussing the imminent death of the Off -topic sub forum today and a thought came up of points actually expiring. I have seen a similar point system used on large forums like PBnation to great effect, however the points would eventually fall off. The message received when getting an infraction are that points will expire except for serious offenses. Well a 5 point offense in a system with a much higher possibility doesn't seem to justify a non-expiring date.

If you stop and think about it member as my self that have been here for three years or longer have gotten into it from time to time. Even vendors have gotten drug into e-fights. It is going to happen it is part of the inevitable nature of an online message board. All I'm asking for is that the points have a life span. Is it fair to have points on your account from say three years ago (forseeing my future)?

Just a thought and any input is appreciated.

Seth

At the time, I was in favor of some of the infractions expiring after a fairly long time, ~1-2 years, for some of the minor infractions like swear filter dodging, steering threads off-topic, etc. I don't think flaming, vendor bashing, insubordination, etc should ever go away.

The principal argument against expiration was that even if you get a few infractions, you're still only looking at a few days off, or a week the second time. The people who've accumulated 40+ points mostly do so continually pushing the limits which are established and getting the same infraction time and again. If you get 4 consecutive flaming infractions, you should be able to figure out what is and is not acceptable.

As a whole, I don't agree with point expiration. It just encourages people to continue with behavior the mods are trying to discourage.

It's not a flaw.

Agreed. I'm also agreed with Hobbles: it's not a flaw. I believe we designed the point system so we could track those who had a habit of breaking the rules. It also lets the Staff review infractions and keeps the enforcement more consistent.

This was just a suggestion. As I stated I see the purpose of the point system but not of having points still counting years after the fact. I mean license points credit collections etc all drop off your record after a period of time.

Does a felony or misdemeanor drop off?

Valid point. Yes felony offenses stay on your record to my knowledge.

So now a notable crime against and individual/society is equivalent to the text posted on a discussion forum that was gauged without the benefit of due process, not to mention consistency and equality of application. There's just a (errr...) slight difference between the two. BTW, misdemeanors, indeed, can and are expunged depending on circumstances. There's that silly due process again. Hell, who needs evidential support with wishful thinking and proof by assertion.

It's merely a comparisson that far more serious things in life are expunged and expired after awhile. Don't take everything so seriously.

I sorta agree. I have 3 infractions, granted 2 are non point infractions but they are from over a year ago and the only trouble I have caused.

I would think an amendment to the points rule should be something similar to like after 6 months of no infractions you get a point take off of the infractions. IMOP

That is something along the lines of what I was suggesting....perhaps points expiring 6 months or so after they were issued...

seriously. I thought this would be a good thread that mod's could take seriously and we can get a change in the rules going.

We need to get back on topic so this thread isnt locked.

How about some kind of jury system. EvoM members get to hear a trial and vote upon a decision? And for penalties, how about suspending ones rights to access certain forums...like suspended from posting in for sale forums or suspended from posting in evo general etc.

when the points system was put into place by the staff several years ago this discussed as stated above. Personally I think that points shouldn't expire, basically you get (3) major, or (10) minor ****ups and then you're gone. If you can't learn what is and isn't accepted after 5 - 10 screwups you don't need to be a part of this community.

thanks for your time and attention on this matter.
