Losing exp points?

Can a mod please explain why I am losing exp points? I just noticed it on my proflie but can't seem to find an explanation. I also did a search on it as well and turned up no results.

If you bring back dead threads - negative points.
Infractions too, I believe.

I was wondering more so if there is a description for why you lose the points. In the past week I have lost about 100 points, I was just looking for a particular reason. As far as I know I haven't done anything wrong. Do the mods deduct the points, or is it setup to automatically withdraw?

As far as I know its hard programming. Not moderator driven.

Ohhh.... So you would rather have people post another thread about the same crap instead of reviving an older one?

Hi everyone, great questions!

The points are going to go up and down over time. (hourly, daily, weekly etc.). I think the best way to approach this is to take the long term view. If you are a positive contributor your point totals will increase over time. The biggest reason for point loss occurs when you had the last post in a thread and it is followed by another member's post. The moderators do not manipulate points and what you are seeing is the constant recalculation. A bit more detailed explanation of actions that affect point totals are here (if you missed the announcement):

It is preferable to ask a question in a new thread than bring back a 10 page old one. No one wants to review old comments that probably do not address your specific problem. A little common sense helps by considering how old is the thread, how big and does it specifically pertain to you. Also, we will continue to fine tune the awards and point allocations over time.

Did anyone notice we removed the 'Middle Bar - Points Needed'? Is it a improvement or would you like it back? I hope this helped answer all the questions. Have fun!

Bob..

Most definitely an improvement.

As for older threads, I've brought back discussions from 3-4 years ago to include additional information. The car weight thread comes to mind immediately. This way, an individual searching for Evo Weight can open an inclusive thread an see a number of data points. As I mentioned before, differentiating between acts on the basis of governed constraints makes the system difficult to implement fairly. Or, there's the option of writing a more complex algorithm. No, I don't expect anyone to do that.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply. Those are great examples and make perfect sense for updating site content. This thread will help us fine tune the system and reduce the number of incentives that might be contrary to good practices. We can change point value on any of the attributes and I welcome specific suggestions! Thanks.

Agreed. Less clutter. And reviving old threads is not necessarily a bad thing if there has been good discusion where someone can glean information that they are looking for.

Should just get rid of it altogether. Just adds worthless clutter. I'm pretty sure people would like larger avatars, instead of this garbage. What's next, car game applications like on facebook?

I think I'm just gonna block this crap with my adblocker so I don't have to look at it.

Thats subjective. You can't rely on newbies to know exactly what to do. How about if someone posts in a old LiveMap thread about using with in conjunction with Tephra V5.1 or whatever. No one is going to want to read a new thread about an old version of Tephra V5.1. Something like this is better posted in an old thread since it will notify the people who are subscribed to it and have experience with it. Plus, you'll get about 20 responses just saying to go with v7 yo!

Major fail on the programming part. How are you going to determine this autonomously?

Hi!

Either I don't understand your question or I did not make my point clear above. . We can change the point value for this or any value. One of the issues we want to avoid is rewarding old thread bumping to get points. That could be a mess quickly. I restate what I said earlier; use common sense. If the community will benefit from the thread content, then bump it via a meaningful reply. Bumping to add post count will get the attention of the moderators. Keep in mind we are discussing the rewarding or removal of 1 or 2 points. Thanks.

Ok so I made a meaningful contribution in two different threads that were not more than a few days from the most recent post. I also had a double post because of the crappy internet in Afghanistan. I was awarded 8 points and 10 points (assuming this is for the content) and then lost 19 points that I have no idea what for because there is no way to verify or itemize why points are given or removed. My suggestion would be to put a reason or even a hot link to what post or thread the points where given or removed because of. If I am losing points because of a double post generated from crappy internet service while in Afghanistan it would lend me to believe that attempting to contribute to the forum while over here will result in a net loss of points.

Do you know how many people get flamed for starting a new thread that has been discussed?
