Question My EVO is sick. Need help

So my car is 100% stock, and has 7100 miles on it. I don't race or anything like that. Occasionally I will run it up through the gears on a on-ramp, but that is about it, and that is not a everyday thing.

So tonight I was at highway speed, I drop down to 3rd, floor it, and as my car acclerates, it quickly runs out of steam at 6k rpms. It is like it ran out of breath. It was very noticeable.

Acclerating through 1st and 2nd is fine, it is just 3rd gear and higher that I loose alot of power at 6k rpms.

Any ideas? Thanks

That's is normal for the pig-rich fuel mapping for the stock EVO... Buy a SAFC or get it reflashed, that will go away... Nothing is wrong with your wonderful ride...

If it is accompanied by a high-pitched wheezing sound, make sure both of the plastic fasteners are in your air scoop. Otherwise, it will cause a high enough vaccuum @ high rpm to suck onto the underside of the hood & cut off the airflow to the engine.

Actually, I do only have one fastener on the intake. I'll locate another fastener for the intake and try it again.

I know it isn't normal because my car never ran out of breath like this before. I have had it a year so I would have noticed this by now.

^ I think someone else posted something about his 3rd gear running out of oomph at 5k about a week ago. See if you can find that thread, maybe there's some helpful info there.

I just found the thread for you. There's not too much helpful info in there though

I guess you could pm the guy that started it and see if he figured anything out.

EVOJimbo, I didn't delete any posts in this thread. Now back on topic....

Ok, I checked under my hood today. Noticed that BOTH the snaps that secure the intake to the front frame of the car were gone! I located some new snaps and secured the intake. Wow, back to full power again! Feels great!

Thanks for the help!

Now the question is, where did they go? Check your air filter, as they are too large to bypass it normally. Mine ended up there. has a new part number for them w/ a cross-tip head (for removal of them, still push to insert). Glad your evo is back to normal again.
