Cold weather + indash LCD
Cold weather + indash LCD
This summer will be my first car audio build, but my girl friend surprised me with a new Pioneer AVH P4200. I was quite impressed with her choice and the unit itself because I was looking for a unit with 7", relatively cheap and a detachable face plate. (this doesn't have it, that is why I'm so concerned) . The custom audio build include my iPad, which i will use as a "car PC" and navi!!
The reason I was looking for a detachable face plate was to be able to detach(obviously) it in our Canadian winter nights and store it safely in my room. Tonight's temperature was -29 and am afraid the LCD screen would eventually fail.
Can anyone give me some reasons to keep pioneer 4200

Check the manual to see what Pioneer says is the operating temperature range for the headunit... but I don't think you'd have to worry... they know being in cars that these stereos are gonna see extreme hot and cold temperatures.
I had a Pioneer headunit with a 6" screen and while it didn't see -30 celsius on a regular basis... it did go thru cold winters (spent some time in Ottawa too)... and it was absolutely fine.

I have had a Pioneer Navi for just over two years now no problem. Screen still works great no cracks or dead pixels.
I think they understand the car goes through a number of heat / cold cycles but check the owners manual.

its wired into the ACC and as soon as you turn the key it turns on.
Anyways, does anyone else live somewhere extremly cold, say edmonton that has used LCD indashes?

Bear in mind that an iPad install may fall under the new legislation forbidding the use of handheld devices while driving, as that law also included the use of laptops and media players. While the law does allow for the use of media players plugged into the sound system, the screen should not be readily viewable to the driver, especially if it has the ability to play video while in motion.
Just a heads up, before you spend the dough on a custom iPad install, just to get busted over that.
