Swain never does the inside of a pipe either. I'm thinking the surface will still be extremely flat and the gasket can pick up the rest of the slack.
i have my downpipe swain coated... and they didnt coat the mating surfaces either...

i think it allows the gasket to still do its job and do the sealing...
100% correct.

I've looked online and it looks like most places that do the inside will also coat the flange or gasket surface area (grimmspeed, performance coatings, buschur, etc etc)

swain is intended to be onthe outside, not inside,

and we tape off ALL of the gasket surfaces and bolt holes before we send them parts

Yea Swain is the only company that would never do it on the inside (giggity) because of the material they use. The companies that use the paint stuff (like the ones I listed above) can do the inside and generally cover the flange surface. It wouldn't make sense to use the swain material on the flange but the ceramic paint stuff seems to be OK. I may still opt for not doing my flange surfaces...

There are differences in ceramics for sure. As already discussed, some cannot be used inside as they won't hold up. Coating the inside is a good thing as it will help reflect more heat from the manifold/turbine from the inside.

The ceramics we use are the only ones that Garrett themselves certifies for use on/in any turbo application for the RX-7 (one of, if not the, hottest temp platforms).

As far as the flange coating goes, it's really a mute point. We choose not to do it to aid in any potential issue with gasket sealing. We take the time to mask them off and ensure they are ceramic free. Others don't take the time to do that, but that doesn't mean you will automatically have sealing issues.
