Beatrush Undertray - My install experience

I recently set about installing this because my car is a daily driver and I wasn't too comfortable using my car as a snow plow after taking off the factory undertray. As with any install, I looked to evom for guidance and found this.

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...y-install.html

The OP recommended using these DZUS fasteners to make the undertray quick-release, a must if you want to use the front towhook or change your oil regularly.

http://kurveygirl.com/shop/product_i...products_id=49

So I ordered two sets at a cool $26 a pop.

I will start by saying that the Beatrush Undertray does NOT include everything needed to install it. The instructions would have you reuse the stock plastic clips to attach the front of the undertray to the lip. If, like me, you became so enraged at the stock clips while removing the undertray that you actually took a serrated blade to a few of them, then you know how ridiculous this notion is. So without the stockers, you need to acquire either replacement clips or some other method of mounting the undertray.

I drilled four holes around the towhook cover to accommodate the DZUS fasteners (this is the ONLY drilling required to make them work) and did a test fit. I was very happy to see that the DZUS fasteners worked perfectly for (1) the towhook cover and (2) attaching the rear part of the undertray to both the front part and to the two brackets that attach it to the car. This allows ease of access to the front towhook and to the oil plug/filter, which is what I really wanted.

However, I quickly realized the DZUS fasteners were not going to work for attaching the front of the undertray to the lip. They are simply too short to pass through the undertray and the plastic tab on the lip and still make it into the female DZUS end to fasten securely. This is compounded by the fact that the plastic tabs, being, well, plastic, tend to flex upward when you apply pressure on them from below, making it all but impossible to get the DZUS fasteners to to reach. I had a friend try as well, but no dice. And we decided that even if we could, somehow, get them to work, it was such a PITA that I would never want to take the undertray off anyway for fear of not getting it on again, thus negating the benefit of quick-release fasteners.

After scratching my head a bit, I decided to look for reusable/removable plastic clips. This is what I found.

http://www.threadrite.com/plastic_cl...etree_clip.htm

I can't tell you exactly the size I got, as I actually went to the physical Thread-Rite location with the undertray to ask someone for advice, but this is what the clip looks like (yes fancy Macro shot):

They were perfect. These clips popped in easily and are very secure, and the best part is that they will come out just by pulling on them really hard. I don't plan on taking the front half of the undertray off very often, but these will make it a lot easier to do than the stock clips would. I am going to order more just to have some lying around. When I do, I will update this thread to include the size.

I decided to make a diagram to help others avoid the minor headache I got trying to figure out how to mount this thing.

In sum, the hardware necessary to mount the Beatrush Undertray as I did is:
- 9 plastic clips
- 9 DZUS fasteners
- 6 regular bolts/nuts (bolts provided with undertray, though you may need to pick up a few additional nuts like I did)

So please, save yourself $26 and only buy ONE package of those DZUS fasteners if you intend to use them. I contacted KurveyGirl about returning the other pack I got and never received a response.

Hope this helps someone.

I just used the five bolts it came in with. Easy to undo and tighten.

Yay, my guide helped! I sometimes have trouble getting the front dzus fasteners to go on, but with a little bit of practice, its easy. I considered ordering longer dzus fasteners a while ago, but I take it off so infrequently I've never gotten around to it.

I'm on my second winter with this undertray and I LOVE IT! Great pics, enjoy man! Go bash through some snow banks or over ice chunks w/o fear of hurting your car

Yeah, I probably should have mentioned this in initial post but slightly longer DZUS fasteners would probably work perfectly with the lip.

Do you leave all the aero bits on during the winter? I have had them on so far but I'm lowered and it always makes me cringe to hear the undertray scraping against packed snow/ice. I think the part that scrapes is the rear edge of the back half of the undertray, where it curves to clear the downpipe (I think that's why).

Don't mention it. Make sure you check out Faust's guide as well. The totally JDM instructions included were a bit hard to read for me.

Ya, I'll get some longer fasteners sometime and update my post. The first winter I left off the aero that goes in front of the wheels, but ran the ones that are more centered. This spring (I updated my other post IIRC) I put those on and have had no problems so far. Don't worry about hearing stuff scrape, it definitely is that back edge. It sounds way worse than it is. Every time you hear that, just think, 'that could have been my oil pan' or 'that could have been my xfer case!' It took a little while, but now when I hear it scrape on a huge chunk of ice or something, it makes me smile, like I just dodged another bullet.

My car is lowered with eibachs/bilsteins. The way I look at it, the undertray is going to take a beating, and I have given it that. That's what it is there for! Mine is still in pretty good shape even after 20k miles and 2 minnesota winters. Once I bent one of the more centered fins, I pulled up too far to a curb...but a pliers got it straight in no time.

Thumbs up Thanks for the tips!

Excellent thread guys, I just reattached my tray today and I'm highly motivated to improve how it is attached.
