You 10.5 turbo guys SUCK!
How come nobody gave a fair waring about those pesky threaded studs on the O2 housing and the the turbo hotside where it bolts to the exhaust manifold? There are so many threads around about the 10.5 hotside mod and the 6.5 Turbo. I think I read all of them and was led to believe that it was a 100% straight swap. The rest of you upgraders beware. It is not a big deal if you make sure you get the a couple of affordable little parts and two gaskets. I'll post the Mitsu part numbers later. My reciept is at Gnulooks house.
We tried almost everything to get those threaded studs off in order to reuse on the new turbo, but failed.
Also, there are two gaskets at each end of the corrogated metal oil line that noone mentioned. The gasket resting against the turbo center section ripped in half when we took the oil line off. Dagnabit!
Gnulooks and I were anticipating a quick victory when installing my 10.5 Ti turbo today ended up having to order four threaded studs and a gasket at the Mitsubishi dealer! Parts won't be in until Wednesday. We can't finish the job until Thursday night. (Are you reading this I.E.?)
The whole job was going smoothly and we SOOOO close to bolting everything back on. Oh well. Now I have to borrow a car and be patient. BTW thanks Noize for helping me with some good advice on the problem (but I had to wait for him to stop laughing at me before he gave it). And a big thanks to Gnulooks. Together, we are downright dangerous in a garage. Dos Equis at 10:30 am anyone?

Would it be a good idea to convert those 4 studs to bolts at this point? I know getting those studs off the turbine housing can be a b*tch. I've done one stud before on my 1g. I double nutted the stud, put a wrench on it, mounted the turbine housing on a vise, and hammered it w/ a 3 lb hammer until it finally cracked loose. You're better off replacing them.

Oh man. We double nutted, yada, yada, yada, infinity! Actually, of the four studs, only one HAS TO remain a stud due to clearance issues. But since Mitsu was open and the two auto part places we visited didn't have super high temperature compatible bolts, we just stayed OEM.
One more thing. It was very interesting to see the visual evidence of leaded race fuel in my exhaust system. I have probably only run about 30 to 35 gallons total through my motor since buying my car but there was fairly thick white coating on everything, including the fins on the turbo's shaft. Maybe I'll go back to 104 unleaded....

You're right, the swap sucks. Sorry I failed to mention the fact that you would be better off buying the four studs prior to the install. I had to take a torch to remove two of them. Yea, the oil line gasket needs to be replaced or take care in removing the turbo. It is a b!tch if you are going in blind. BTW, it is an all day event, not just two hours.

Somebody call a waaaaaambulance. You're not going to learn unless you dive in, right? No crybabies. Why don't you do the work and post the results with photos?

Smogrunner,
Keep this place in mind for hard to find parts like studs and bolts that can withstand turbo environment. http://www.mcmaster.com/
I usually receive my orders by the next day since they have a warehouse in Santa Fe Springs, CA.

Ah oh...here come the experts.
GUYS, LISTEN...PURCHASE THE FOUR STUDS ON THE HOTSIDE FROM MITSUBISHI, THEN DO THE SWAP. END OF STORY!
What are you going to want next? A DIY on automotive tuning? Sorry...sarcasm.

Hmm.. The new Ti turbo I got had a stud and gasket kit (O2 housing gasket, turbo gasket, oil and coolant gaskets/fittings.. I just put the 10.5 housing on the new turbo, so I never experienced that PITA stud issue..

. You're results will be no different from just the tubine housing swap. Go ahead, spend the extra $600-$700. SPUR ON THE ECONOMY!
