rotate it such that the stationary line or dot is moving towards the R.

yes u will turn the inside of the cam gears to the left thus making the outside center marking gotoward the R., even though the center cam section is going to the left, your timing belt and outside gears will be moving to the right.. I have the same gears.

Vishnu gears are - 0 + if you want to retard (-)the cam from 0, turn the cam gear nut to the left [you are actually moving the the cam] Are the AEM gears different?

this would be correct, but the markings are different on those. They put the degree markings on the outside, where AEM's markings are on the inside with the zero being in the center peice on the outside of the cam gear.

OK, I'm still confused. Let's say that I have the stock cam gear in front of me. If I wanted to retard that gear, towards which direction would I move the locating hole?

no, the dowel pin would move backward, making the teeth and timing belt move foward...I was thinking opposite of each other, the AEM timing markings are on the inside, and zero mark is on the outside....the vishnu ones are exact opposite. Please excuse my backwardsness up above.

I edited my above posts to be correct.

No, don't worry. I appreciate people trying to help. For me a picture is worth 1K words... I'm actually thinking about modifying the stock cam gears to retard the cams the 4 degrees that seem to be the best for the stock cams...... Anyway, I want tp make damned sure which way to move the hole before starting with the mill

no problem man....hope i helped you out....oh and by the pic above with the drawing...if the center section moved in the direction of the arrow, that would be advancing.
