Unhappy pop-pop-pop with Meth!

Here is the dilemma. I plan on getting it tuned anyway from Andrew soon. (Dyno4mance).

My alkycontrol is set at 10 o'clock initial, and 2 o'clock at the other white knob on the right. The blue on/off is at 2 o'clock.

If I gradually get on the gas, I can get the alky kit to run fine(squirts good, continues to the higher boost levels!) Havent got on it enough to see actually what boost I am running, but I bet I cant get over 18PSI! if I Stomp on it, I get the pop pop pop at higher RPM's, and higher boost levels. WHY?!

I have "fiddled" with the knobs, blue, left white one was at 11:00, and the white one on the right was at 1:00. I have turned the knobs every way I can think of (except the right way obviously) If I get gradually on the gas, the pops are not comming on till higher RPM/Higher boost, but they are still there. I cant stomp on it and even get out of my own way!

I have the 100% Meth comming on at 6PSI of boost, the AFR's are good, up until the popping, then its rich. any input/ideas?! I also have the Xede race map/methanol map installed. any input would be appreciated! There has to be a way to get a general "street-tune" before I get the dyno tune!

Change Plugs. Also, you may want to turn down the inital spray.

We are also starting to think that the factory coils might have a certain lifespan before they start negatively effecting performance. More on that later.

Thanks alot Dustin! I dont know if it matters, but I also installed the HKS twin power. Spark magnifier? At about the same time I got the Methanol kit working correctly! I can change the plugs first, and then if that doesnt do it, I can replace the coils and report back. I have 45k+ miles on the beast now.

Set your spray to start at 1psi and max it out at 14psi

That is where I set mine at no problems, boosting 30psi on the stock turbo without any pops.

Are you still using the stock plugs? If not put them back on they are great plugs for the car.

Examine the plugs when you change them and see that no one is different than the others.

I found the Denso IW-24's gapped at .026 with the DLI are good to 27-28 psi no problem. I have my aky hit at 13psi and max by 18psi. If is to set to low I ran into problems with it still spaying during fast shifts causing the afr's to sag into the 9's and slowing boost recovery.

My evo does and I'm not running Meth - I have essentially a Vishnu Stage 1++. Your problem sounds very similar to mine - partial throttle and boost below 19 PSI - no "chuf-chuff" or popping. Above 19 PSI or at WOT - I get the popping. This started happening a month or so after I came back from Dyno4mance earlier this year.

I've been trying to find the solution to this problem for months.

Come to think of it I think someone had suggested to me a while ago to change plugs and I spoke to others who discounted this. If its the plugs I'm going to feel really, really dumb and happy at the same time. When Hurricane Wilma blows by (I'm in South Florida) I'll be doing this next week.

Dustin/Shiv - have you any personal experience with Switzer's coil on plug ignition?

I have the alkycontrol kit as well. First off, make sure you hooked up the 3bar map sensor correctly so it reading the same boost as your boost controller. Very important. Also, with alcohol, you really got to get it professionally tuned with a wide band by somebody who knows what they are doing in my opinion. Tuning for alcohol is very hard if you don't know what you're doing. Checking plugs is also a good idea as well.

Man - I hope its the plugs - I'm running NGK BR8ES. I'm tempted to drive around today and see if any autoparts stores are open, but I need to button down my house before this storm gets here.

IT IS THE PLUGS! go find some, and be careful down there! you got a place to stay up here if needed! kinda far though! When running leaner, I had to change my plugs every 3K miles, EVERY time the problem went away!!!!

Appreciate the advice and the offer. Hopefully it'll just be a Cat 1 w/ rain & a lil wind.

What plugs are you using?

NGKBR8ES! the plugs I had, were gapped at 24. after 3K miles, when the high rpm hiccups, pops happened, I pulled the plugs to reveal a 34 gap! the spark would get blown out, and the spark couldnt "jump over" the gap. let us know how it turned out!

I have a 91oct+meth map that you guys may want to test out. I mapped it on the Turbo Magazine project car the other day. It ended up making 380whp on the DTS dyno at XS Engineering and 320whp on our dyno. Basically a Stg 1+ running the methanol kit with the XEDE providing a mapped 0-5v input to the alchy controller. I'll post it on Monday.
