These two cars are so close to each other, it really just comes down to what you like. People ask me sometimes why the Evo and not an STi. I just say 'cause I liked the Evo better. You can't really rationalize the decision - there isn't much rationality in buying a car like that to begin with .

Both great cars, but Evos respond better to mods and clearly outhandle STIs. Period.

i think the sti would be a great car if they didnt change the front end, no really thats not the reason, i would get a sti if i planed to keep it stock and under warrenty, they seem maxed at factory. good for the enthusiast that really didnt wanna mod much or at all. it is a toss up there, they both are almost equal with the evo being a bit faster.

for power and mod friendly. the evo has more potential to me, you can get great numbers from basic mods.

btw the 05 Sti was my first choice, but i couldnt find a new one, so i went with the IX

just my opinion

STI - for those who love to go skiing or biking with roof racks, road trip, and don't
like turbo lag. In other words Civilized Fun and more into image.

Evo - for those who like to go fast, track, drag, road race, don't care to much
about paint chips and mod like hell. It's all about brute force and recognition.

That's my thought on both cars.

I don't agree with the civilized part but it's obvious, by sheer numbers, that most people do agree. Here where I live in the outdoor sports Mecca of Boulder Co. there are over 10 to 1 Sti's to EVO's and almost all the Sti's are sporting a roof rack. At the ski area parking lots, Stis a plenty and as usual I'm the lone EVO.

Funny enough I view my personal car as the ultimate SUV (that's right SUV) because of it's uncompromising flexibility. In the course of a week last November my car re-broke the street car track record at the track (a record it all ready owned) took me skiing and mountain biking the days before and after the track and then towed (in high speed style!) my dirt-bike all the way to MOAB (5 1/2 hours each way, seven in "normal" car). Also lets not forget the two kids seats in the back, the mega-watt amazing stereo (thank you Kustom Kar Audio) and smooth ride courtesy of my Vishnu Ohlins....

Car of the year? Hell it's car of the Century

Chronohunter, I can't wait to join you on some of these racing ventures. You won't be the lone Evo very often as long as Boulder isn't too far away from C-Springs.

Warr, you're on the way to Pueblo and near Pikes Peak so not to worry, we'll get to play this year

I'm registered for PMI on March 11th as part of the NASA event. I'll just be in HPDE2, though, so I won't be racing with you I'm sure, but I do hope that you (and others) are there to hang out in the pits. I'd love to watch your run group from the course, too...

Look at my sig.... I've got some justification in my opinions.

Comparing the 03-05 Evos to the STi - lightly modded the STi is superior to me. I've had both, and the STi just cranks out soooo much more torque at lower rpm's thanks to the extra 1/2 liter of displacement.
Now, if you want more than 300whp; go with the Evo, it does it better big.

Now, figuring in the 06's, the Mivec changes and what Shiv has been stating, I'm thinking of getting an Evo IX.

My modding philosophy is TBE and tuning; period.

You can get more out of an Evo's stock turbo, so a basic exhaust and tune will get you more peak HP in an Evo. There is no doubt about that. However, the low end torque of the STi is still greater, which makes it more pleasant to drive around town. For drag racing the Evo would of course win with similar conditions and prep.

The things is, while the Evo guys are upgrading their cams, valvetrain and exhaust manifolds, STi's are making 500-650 whp on stock cams, valvetrain, and manifolds. There are several STi guys doing that with forged pistons and no other engine mods, while Evos replace pistons, rods, head studs, cams, valvetrain, etc. I think once you upgrade the turbo on both cars, but before you pass 600 HP or so, the STi can be cheaper to build.

Above that level of power the Subaru engines have trouble breathing due to head flow regardless of cams, and the Evo has a definite advantage at that point in terms of power potential per dollar. Extensive head work is expensive.

The way I see it you really can't lose either way. I recommend driving both as most people decide they know which one they like best after test driving them.

if you want one of these cars you also have to think of ow the car handles and feels and to me the sti feels sloshy and soft while the evo is shure and sturdy. also a common misconseption of the evois that the trans sux but the real problem is that the evo from the factory comes with a satey that protects ur drivetrain at the expense of ur clutch. i had to replace my clutch but only because i learned how to drive and launch on it. in my opinion evo all the way thats why theres one in my garage and not an sti

Shiv....

Can you compare dyno #'s for the Evo IX vs the STi??

Let's say something normal and equal mods. How about full 3" TBE on both, and a custom dyno-tune. I believe the new IX's are pumping out a lot more, but I'm worried I'll miss the down low torque I had in my 05 STi. Trying to decide here...
