What I'm curious about is whether either have a bigger gain going from 91 to 93 octane? I would assume no, but curious since I live in the land of 93 and that's what my next car will be tuned for...

to add, I love sti's, they are great cars, but as everyone said, they are more for those who mod their cars lightly. They are reliable and good for those sticking close to warranty.
It also comes down to your taste. For example, I was looking into buying either an Evo or an STi (surprise surprise)...so I posted in both forums go both sides of advice, blah blah blah, talked to friends, some said they loved the boxer rumble, some said the Evo looked better, so all in all, i was pretty confused, even after many people explained to me their opinion.
so I went to test drive them. First was the STi. Dang, the first time I got in, I felt the car was bigger than I thought...sort of felt like a muscle car, with the hood scoop staring at me in the hood. If the car wouldve felt smaller or more compacted, like the Evo, the scoop wouldve serve another meaning, but I just felt i was in a heavy car...one of those mustangs. The nice boxer rumble helped reenforced this image as the hood scoop shook as the speeds increased. Needless to say, a once feature I liked about the STi, soon turned into annoyance when I felt it was sort of in my way. The wing was annoying to (same was the Evo's...a bit more since its thicker.), so all this didnt helped at that precised moment.
when I got in the Evo, i immediately noticed the seats hug tighter and the steering wheel was nicer. Car felt like I expected and liked it better.
The STI overall, felt like a muscle car. Why?
Hood scoop (that shook around...felt i was driving a freakin ford), big interior (feeling wise, probably smaller than the Evo's since I know for a fact the Evo has more leg room behind), a more linear power band (felt like the car was supercharged, rather than turbocharged), and boxer rumble (sort of like V8ish). Car just seems to get louder rather than faster as the RPMs go up.
After taking some curves, the Sti finally felt more musclelish as I remembered it had more body roll.
So yeah, i ended up liking the Evo better. Its just a matter of personal taste. Im sure many STi owners/enthusiasts love the features I just described as dislikes.

STI is more relaible stock for stock.
After slight mods, i have alot of friends complaining about the STI having issues being modded.
My evo IX with only TBE, MBC TUNE ran a 12.1 @117 mph. soo... The STI turbo had its fastest time ever of like a low low 12... i have seen stock turbo evo's knock low 11's high 10's. (not reality though)

Get the IX
Get the IX. I have both an 05 sti and an 06 IX and the IX is the more fun car. The sti is fun, but the evo makes you feel like you are driving a race car. Every time I drive the sti I think it's a really nice car, then I get in my IX and end up saying what a great car! Fun, fun and then more fun!
STI makes more low end torque and mid range power and is a better daily driver. Better clutch, tranny and t-case. The evo makes way more top end power and the IX's have improved midrange power, but is more of a race car on the street especially the RS that hos roll up windows and no sound insulation to make it the lightes of the evos. They also have more clutch and tranny and t-case issues. I like the STI for a daily driver partially because of the tighter turning radious. The evo you gotta rev the crap out of it to really haul *** and its harder to make that U turn in the street unless you use the E brake.
The STI has a better manual in my opinion, but its short gearing makes it hard to get good 1/4 mile times.
STIs are harder to work on in my opinion. Try changing spark plugs, jeeze what a PITA. There is just crap all over the engine too. I like the simplicity of the Evo.
However, if you are going to just do a stage II STI and stop, that is a better daily driver and has better crash ratings which if you have seen some of the nasty accidents people get into in both cars, you'll see why this can be an important factor.
I have owned an 04 STI, 03 Evo VIII and Evo IX at the same time.
