EVO holds more power up top towards redline while the STi makes peak power at around 5800rpm and falls off from there. The STi, however, makes a nice wad of torque in the 3500-4000rpm range. The EVO is excellent down low as well just not quite as strong. Feel free to post this wherever you want

Above that level of power the Subaru engines have trouble breathing due to head flow regardless of cams, and the Evo has a definite advantage at that point in terms of power potential per dollar. Extensive head work is expensive.

The way I see it you really can't lose either way. I recommend driving both as most people decide they know which one they like best after test driving them.
Where are all these 500-650 whp STis on stockish internals? Getting there engines rebuilt after one full wot pass!

I was a WORK's Evo owner but went Vishnu and was very happy I did. No Sti beat me with my Vishnu stage 1+. Not even turbo upgraded ones in my area. With my p2 equiped Evo it was a drivers race with stock Stis.

I had a WRX before this car and the only time I miss it is when I need to take our dog to the vet. I have friends with very modded STis, but there is no comparison in my book. I like Subaru as a company better, but from a performance and power producing standpoint, the STi falls short in so many places.

I owned both... My 05 Sti had full tbe (no cat) and was protuned at Agile Motorsports. Put down 300awhp and 310awtq on their dynopack. I would go head to head with my friends 05 evo with just a tbe intake and mbc set to 20psi with no tuning on his part.

My current evo only has a tbe intake and hallman mbc set to 20psi. I just had 4th and 5th gear pulls with the same friend. His evo is now cammed (272s) with a custom tune from TT (340awhp on their dynojet) and I beat him in both pulls. The only time he beat me was on the 3rd gear pull... That comes to show you some real world conditions...

Plus the evo handles a thousand time better... take my word for it...

I got the same dilema before. It's really a matter of preference. Both evo and sti are great cars. Interview tuners who tweak both cars and see which is better in their opinion. It helps minimize that confusion. After I did that, I am very happy with what I end up getting.
Good luck

Your IX has less lag and more tq is that ur point? A Yugo would beat my 30R on a non boost brake 4th or 5th gear pull at low rpms.

I had a very open mind while trying to choose. It came down to comfort and practicality for me. I fit in the Evo. I don't fit in the STI. Plus the back seats in an Evo will fit adults. There is NO WAY you are getting two full sized adults into the back of the STI. No way... none!

If you want torque, get a IX and put a 2.3 stroker in it. You will have a BEAST!

Yep, I went the flash route with my 03. I was one of the first Evo owners, purchased in April 2003. Works was the first tuner to come out with this 'flash' idea that I'd never heard of. No offense against them per-say; but I'll never do a flash of anykind again.
Did a tuned Utec (with map selector) in my STi and loved the options a piggy-back gives.
If I can sell my current right outright; I'll probably find a used 05 STi. If not, I think I'm gonna snag a IX soon on trade-in at my old dealer. Kinda trying to see the comparisons and all. I know the Xede isn't officially out for the IX, so I'm curious what I'd put on it for a piggy-back. Of course, it'd take a month to burn through the brake-in miles...

Evo 9s make 295 whp with full exhaust and flash on 91. In the post by boomn it said a tuned 9 only makes 275 whp. Shiv may have made a mistake when he typed that.

I think what he said is correct. There's different dyno's and all that. He quoted numbers he sees on his dyno.

What I'm curious about is whether either have a bigger gain going from 91 to 93 octane? I would assume no, but curious since I live in the land of 93 and that's what my next car will be tuned for...
