Putting camgears on a highly modified evo8 with 264HKS. Would you benefit any without having to go to the 272 or 280s?Could you extract and more potential hp out of them?
What would you set them at?

I would also like to know this as I'm debating on whether to get 264s or 272s or a combination of both. I want the most torque I can get.

Well here is what I can tell you....

I picked up 31HP and 21TQ with 272s at -3/-3. From stock cams, I didn't lose any power or spool anywhere. Peak HP was about the same no matter where I set my cam gears however I was able to move where peak TQ and HP hit in the power band. The difference between having cam gears and not having cam gears was about 5WHP. I was able to move peak TQ earlier or later in the powerband but power was about the same across the board.

With gears set at 0/0 I had a little less low end and a little more top end. With cam gears set at -3/-3 lost 3WHP up top from 6000-7500k but picked up about 6WHP between 4200 and 5800 RPM. I road race and love torque so I like having more midrange than top end.

In my opinion the difference between cam gears and not having cam gears is minimal and not worth th price new. If you dont mind the extra work they may be worth their price used. Personally I was hoping for 15WHP gains with cam gears but the truth is all they really allow you to do is move the power to where you want it.

But you didn't experiment with different lobe separation angles, which makes the most significant impact on power characteristics.

I was speaking about cam gears with the stock cams. I won't even invest in them if they don't yield at least 10whp either in tq or hp.

Honestly....I wouldn't even know where to begin that test. I purchased gears in hopes of picking up 10-15WHP in the area of the powerband that I most used.

After trying various different settings all I can say is that they are good for moving the power band around but not really making more HP/TQ.

The difference between 0/0 and -3/-3 .....well the numbers were within 5WHP but where the peak torque actually hit changed about 1k RPM.

To me....kind of a waste especially because there is a risk that the gears may come loose. Its also an additional work during the install.

I would get cams without cam gears or not get gears at all.
