CA. Smog Questions
CA. Smog Questions
We are moving back to California and I have a question about my slightly modified Evo 9 MR. I know Ca. is strict, but wanted to get your opinions on a few of my mods / pending mods. Thanks
A few questions about CA. emissions and whether certain mods will be acceptable:
(1) MBC ? I have been controlling boost with the ECU, but my wga is really loose and opening too soon, so I am going back to my MBC.
(2) Megan Racing TBE w/ Cat.? I have the stock exhaust, so I could just swap for the test.
(3) Alk / Meth injection? I don't run Meth yet, but thought it would be an easy / cheap way to address the 91 octane issue.
(4) UICP ? I would like to get a UICP if I get the Meth kit, but I know it is not necessary. So if this draws attention / issues, I will just forget it.
(5) Airbox lid is cut open a bit ( I never had problems with 911s with cut airboxes), but I have a stock lid as well.
Thanks a ton for your help / advice.

Even though you might pass smog in California, if you ever get caught you need to pass a visual inspection as well. If there is anything aftermarket the inspector finds that fails visual, you fail everything. Things like intake/exhaust should pass, but even intake requires a CARB sticker provided by the company. When I got inspected for my turbo civic, he popped open my hood, closed it, and said come back tommorow(haha, he could have just failed me, good guy though). Each time you go though to get inspected it costs you $160+. As long as you arent too flashy, they really wont pull you over and check ur engine. If you speed, then they might pop your hood cuz of your huge exhaust. I can think of more, but there are too many laws.
BTW: Most Cops carry digital camera's on them, and they take pictures of your modifications

Wrap the exhaust manifold to keep the gases hot as it passes through the cat. I'm not sure 'bout the rest though. I too am looking for a street legal set up, but I have yet to venture beyond the downpipe, high flow cat, exhaust, and airfilter...
