Engine Rebuild in San Jose, CA area

well, my 2005 Evo MR has decided to kill the cylinder 1 rod after 44k miles of driving. started making a nasty "clak-clak-clak" sound yesterday, took it to a shop and the guy there said their is a lot of metal in the oil and that it seems like the rod has failed. he is saying the engine will need to be rebuilt or replaced....

he gave an estimate of like $9k to rebuild it. not even sure if it's worth putting that kind of money into it or not, but if i do go ahead with a rebuild, i'm wondering if there are any recommended shops in the San Jose, CA area?

GST in Hayward is the only one i've heard much about, so i'm gonna give them a call to see what they say. any other suggestions would help.

so bummed......

have been trying to call them. guess GST must be at lunch right now.
hopefully i'll talk to them this afternoon to get their view on options and prices.

just not thinking it's worth putting $10k into an engine rebuild...

So what is included in that estimate? What parts would they be using? It sounds a little steep...

9K for a rebuild!?

You can buy a new IX crate engine for $5-6K.

not sure why i didn't think of this earlier, but the Evo has a 10yr/100000mile warranty on the drivetrain. ended up calling Capitol Mitsu (since that's the only choice around here) and they told me to bring it in and said it should be covered as long as the car has been maintained well. i've had the dealership do all the maint work, so i guess they can decide if that means it was "maintained well".

hoping they will handle this and i won't be out a grip of money. if they try to deny me for some reason (my car is bone stock, so shouldn't be an issue), then i think i will go the GST route.

fingers crossed that i will hear good news from Capitol tomorrow...

DO NOT GO TO Capitol Mitsubishi. I know they are close and all... but, well... read this

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/we...-buy-them.html

GST, Full Function and Speed Element are all located in the bay area and can help you out.
