My main concern, which I did not specify earlier is what type of engine management do you guys recommend, i.e. a complete stand-alone, piggy-back or a flash type system? I am at a loss when trying to determine exactly which is the best option out there. Also, wouldnt the type of system I go for be determined by how extensive I wish to modify?
Please post comments as any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

The ECU is really not frendly and Robert can atest to. Yes it acts well to a AFC and a flash is just remapping of the ECU. Robert i s thinking that the timming on these ecu's suck monkey *****. SO all in all you may want to save up and get a full standalone. Think of it in money terms. Stanalone $1350. Or AFC 350 then the patch harrenss $150, then go and buy a data logger $300-$500 buxs then a flash $199-$450 bux. SO all in all save your money and get a standalone if you really want ot tune it your self and go very fast. Tuning it youself may be a draw back but you can really learn alot from it. Be prepared to spend hours on it. But it is time well spent in the long run. Both Robert and I have standalones on our DSM's both are Haltechs the AEM are jsut junk on the DSM but on the EVO they seEm to be working A OK! If getting the AEM do not be cheap get the 3.5 map sensor and the wideband O2 sensor. Getting late I am wrapping this up. I hope this helps out.

Howzit!
I happen to be the proud owner of the only Evo on Kauai (so far: good & bad at the same time). Just wanted to say hi. Didn't really read all the threads leading up to this point. Anyway if any of you guys happen to know how to properly tune an S-AFC, please send me a message.(Currently running the Bushur settings) Plan on running at the Drags on Kauai this 4th of July weekend.

lilgsx: Excellent input and much appreciated. However, I have so many more questions. Isnt it difficult to tune a stand-alone without the aid of a dyno? I guess the bottom line is this, would you guys be willing to assist? Im sure this isnt going to be an easy process and even harder by myself. Also, are you guys going to be going the same route?
kauai evo: no input on the S-AFC, i think so settings will vary from vehicle to vehicle though. what color is your evo? i was thinking of putting a carbon fiber hood on my weightless white evo and was wondering how it would it look. yours wouldnt happen to be white would it?
For the moment I'm not planning to mod my car to become a FAST FAST car, for me it's already fast
.
I need to understand more about it, just wait some of us put that stand alone thing in their car and see how it works.

The stock computer system is not that great. It has a hyper-sensitive knock sensor, and refuses to give any meaningfull timing increases with race gas. The 1st gen DSM computer system was a VERY friendly system. It would give you huge timing gains with race gas, but the stock EVO ECU does not give much timing at all, no matter what gas you run. That's why all these ECU flahes are getting popular. Mitshubishi leaves so much HP on the table from extremely conservative timing tables, and these flashes are fixing that. I can't go with a flash because the tuning is static on a flash. With a flash, the timing is set up for pump gas, and you won't be able to fully capitalize on race gas. It would be better than a stock ECU, but still not adaptable like a stand-alone system. I'll be going to an AEM stand-alone for this.
I'll be selling my AFCII with spare ECU patch harness for $350. One can go and buy a new AFC for $350 no problem, but I'm including a $140 harness and it will come all wired up for true plug and play operation for the buyer, and no shipping for a local sale. Let me know if any of you guys are interested.

what about the xede that includes different maps that are octane dependent? those arent necessarily static, then again they arent as dynamic as the AEM unit. however, for those of us with less tuning experience, would you recommend that?
what parameters are on the AFC-II? what gains have you seen with the unit? is it used instead of a flash or stand-alone unit? tell me more about it and i might be interested.

I would beat Shiv in his head with his own unit. I hate the xede. Period! I think the Utec is better and it is more user frendily and you can always get ahold of someone at Turbo XS. But I still would get a AEM over either of them.
i would love to get the AEM but i dont want to get in over my head if it is going to be too difficult to tune. last thing i need is to blow my engine up. how in-depth does my knowldege need to be before i can benefit from the AEM?
Well if Robert tunes it then it is set. No need to worry about it. I can get hte AEM's from RRE with many maps all ready made for them.
You guys have 3 weeks to live without me posting
I am flying out tonight on Vacation until the 22 of July. Going to Fl and driving up to Bufflo NY. So Laters all. Boost hard,& speed safe.
