Yes, thats the crazy thing. older muscle cars pre 76 iirc are exempt so you can do as you wish. I was living in Norcal near where OP is from and I always saw lots of older muscle cars running around. I think thats because it was the only thing you could modify. To OP, if you register your car in Healdsburg you wont need to smog your car.
Certain areas in Cali are deemed to have 'clean air' so certain towns dont require you to smog your car beyond the first time when you initially purchase it.
The rule in CA is any car older than thirty years is 100% smog exempt.
Thank god I'm not in California.

I know this has been a regular thing.. but this is a STEPPED UP enforcement program done by the CHP.. It doesn't matter what your local city cop says the CHP have specially trained officers now who are on the road ONLY looking for smog and headlight violations. I got pulled over for smog.. I don't speed, i was just driving home from work.
we don't have that emissions and smog bull**** over here. i know years back you had to get your car emission checked i believe yearly, then it was taken away.

a.) So at the ref are inter coolers cool?
b.) Stock frame turbos are not cool?
c.) Cat-back exhaust/down pipe not cool?
d.) S1 cams cool?
I have had two cops look under my hood and neither one said a thing to me about all of my shiny parts. I LOVE INJEN'S CARB APPROVAL. I just pointed to the CARB numbers on the intake/uicp and one was like, cool I don't give a **** about your car have a nice day slow down.

Like I said, the CHP told me its a stepped up program they are doing right now.. They are profiling cars and pulling them over like crazy.
Yeah, it's dumb as hell. My brother went to get his axel-back ticket signed off at the referee and he told me they check for EVERYTHING. He said they looked for intercoolers, hfc's, dp's and all of that stuff.
And if it matters the stock WRX exhaust put out 79 DB at 4.5K RPM and shot to 89 while droning down.

Key thing to not gettin pulled over dont look like a criminal, n dont look at the cop more then once. Me i start bobbin my head to music when they pull up next to me or behind me seen a few laugh. My cars far from stock aggressive cam lope etc... Key thing like I said, u get a ticket swap ur cat and other emission stuff on. Pass test Keep certificate for next time, dont be scared of cops. U wanna not get messed with need to search stealth mods. I dd in Cali with 91 I rarely get tickets.
