I still laugh at the Halo crowd considering themselves "LAN Gamerz" ... hah!

Wanna come fix my red ring? Or pay my yearly fee to use Xbox Live? Or install an HDMI cable hookup for me? Or upgrade my hard drive? Or fix it to play bluerays? Or add a media card slot option? Or make it play all the old Xbox games? Or plug a portable hard drive in it and let me copy all my saves and my accounts on to it? Or have USB rechargeable Bluetooth controllers? Or keep the fan noise at a reasonable level when playing games/watching movies?
Or come fix my red ring?
I got both my 360 and PS3 the same year. The year the PS3 had first come out and the 60 gb one was 600 bucks. I got them both within the same month also, brand new. My 360 has problems since day 1. To this date my PS3 has only had two problems and neither are hardware related: PSN had a huge crash the other day, price ya pay for not paying a price. And my R2 trigger spring has worn out from use on my main controller. That's after like 4 years though
Seriously, the Xbox has a few nice things: Xbox Live does have it's upside in that it is supported by people paying money, so it works pretty well, but not all that much better than PSN. The controllers are a MUCH better shape and feel in your hands, but the main thing: The triggers, can be added on to the PS3 controllers pretty easily. And even though PS3 has Netflix now, you have to have a disk in and it doesn't work as smoothly as Xbox. Then again, I have an HDMI hookup for my computer and it runs netflix better than both... so.
The only other thing it has is that some of the games for Xbox only are pretty good, Fable, GOW, um... There's probably a few more. But most are also PC/Xbox only, so I have em on PC because PC > All.

I've never had a problem with my xbox at all. Got 120gb hard drive. 50 bucks a year is nothing. Got wireless controllers, mic, and internet. Never had a loud fan.
Ya sometimes i wish it played blue ray but oh well i guess.
Guess we'll have to agree to disagree

Since the creation of the xbox, they've shrunk the die size down the CPU by 50%, eliminating nearly all red ring of death instances. If you bought an xbox in the first 2 years of its product life, there is nearly a 90% chance its dead. They sort of addressed the issue by extending warranties and fixing all the xbox's that died. It's my guess that even half of those have died all over again, and are now out of warranty. Microsoft played it pretty smart though, because by the time your old reparied xbox died, you could go down to the store and buy a new one for $179.00 and just put your old HD in it. Now, I don't necessarily think its cool to engineer a product that you'd need to buy twice or three times through its product life cycle, but I guess MS figured out a way to trick us all. I'm on my second xbox and with all the new games coming out (which I don't even really play these days), I feel almost obligated to buy a replacement. Here's some more stupid shiz associated with XBL. Why are we paying for it? The games are all hosted on people's xbox's. We buy everything from the online shop, PLUS we pay to access it. What a damn rip. MS wins, by proving we are stupid enough to buy it all up. Kind of a bummer victory, IMO.
Then there's Sony.
When the playstation 3 first came out, they were selling it for $600.00, and taking a loss of over $200.00 a unit. Research and development on the ps3 (mostly cell processor) put them in the hole a metric shatner in terms of cost. Sony is barely looking at their first **quarter** in the black in the games division since the launch of the ps3. Last year was the first year my ps3 was used for much other than a Blu Ray player. The games have been ho-hum since the launch of the console, and I swear to god if I hear any more about gran turismo before it comes out, I'm going to bomb polyphony digital. Talk about a launch title gone way fscking wrong.
They also claimed the ps3 would be a 10 year console. I think thats a pretty bold (and probably stupid) statement. Sure, the longer a console is around, the more they can milk out of it. They did some awesome things with the ps2. Game developers don't like using 10 year old technology anymore, though. The distinction between consoles and pc's is becoming ever more blurry, whichever console manufacturer can keep developers more focused on games, and less focused on how it works with this or that system is going to get the more expansive library this time around. I don't think Sony has done themselves any favors by chaining themselves to a console that cost them way too much to develop for the next 10 years (7 years left, but you get me).
The ps3 could be better for watching media (music, for example) content because its so much more quiet, but sony couldnt even get that right because browsing music/movies on the ps3 is a much bigger PITA than it is on the xbox. I actually wrote a blog about the differences betwen the two in using them as a home media content server. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I prefer the ps3 for streaming HD content from my Mac, because the ps3 is noticeably less noisy. Also, even though you can install a 7200 rpm drive of your choice in the ps3, it really doesn't make it much faster. I know, because I did it. I also installed Yellow dog linux on my ps3 and did some more futzing around with it. It's not a bad machine.
Bottom line for me:
Build quality and reliability go to the ps3
Games and interface go to the xbox
Controllers: xbox 360 controllers last about 10 times longer before a charge, and because I don't have small asian child-like hands, I need a full sized controller. XB wins that one.
I wish I could say its a wash, but it's not. I'd take great games and POS console I have to buy more times, than a single over priced console I'm still looking to use more often. Sony could easily fix this by giving more developers tools and incentives to create better games.
Please don't take much of what I say too seriously. I swear to god if this turns into an argument about consoles I'll kick my cat through the window.

If I could afford to buy a new Xbox instead of a struggling old one. I'm sure I'd say they are much closer, esp if I bought an Elite.
Luckily for me, I got the 600 dollar PS3. The new ones are ****. I'd have paid 800 for mine when I got it. I paid 1200 for my PC. I'd pay 500 for an Xbox that would work better too and play ALL the old Xbox games. I've got a whole library of games that sits on top of my old xbox in case I ever want to play them. (then again, I've still got my genesis and game cube and N64 and SNES too, and all their games)
There are so few games I even want to play on console anyway, the only ones I own are pretty much ones that friends own or are awesome and only available on that console. And any console game that is available on multiples, unless friends buy it for something else (a la Borderlands) I buy it for PS3.
My Wii is actually over at a friend's house with most all of my games, just so it gets used when we have parties there.

Uh-oh, the great console debate!
For what it's worth, I own both consoles and enjoy both of them. However, in terms of H/W reliability PS3 wins hands down. I am on my 3rd 360 right now due to RROD's. Hopefully my new Elite system will last longer than 1.5 years. My PS3 has lasted 3 years with no problems.
I enjoy Xbox Live more than PSN in regards to connecting and playing with your friends, but at least PSN is free (even though I don't mind paying $50 for Xbox Live). PSN is a PITA to connect with friends and stay connected with them.
Sure the PS3 has its own issues, but none on the scale the 360 has had. Also, the PSN issue Sunday night was a S/W issue easily resolved by resetting the Date/Time settings due to code regarding leap year at least if you have the old, fat PS3's.
Considering the 360's reliability I would have just stuck with the PS3, but then I would miss out on playing the excellent console specific games.

On occasion, I'll still hack xbox's and stuff for friends and what not. Get yourself a 600 gb drive and I could probably set you with an xbox that has all of your games stored right on the drive, as well as every nintendo game, super nintendo game, an genesis game ever created, right on the drive..with the ability to copy any other xbox game you have direct-to-drive also. My last 360 had a dvd drive in it which I replaced the firmware on, allowing me to run copied games. This was *****in, but then the unit died. No, I didn't get banned from XBL because my sh*t is not junior varsity. At any rate, like its already been said. 360 for games. ps3 for well built, reliable blu ray player (thats faster than most of the other blu ray players by a healthy margin). Sony just needs to get their games cranked out. the console's been out 3 years and I couldn't even tell you 10 games worth owning for it that I couldn't just go buy on the xbox, and THAT's what's really killing Sony this time around. Software developers don't want to commit to just one console, because the games cost as much, if not more than movies to make these days.
I should rephrase, I go where the games are. I don't care which console they are on. I think both groups have made it pretty hard to get behind, when you break it down.
