Turbo Selection Questions

Hey guys!

Im sure most of you know Im going to be starting a turbo build on the ol' RA shortly. Well my dad mentioned something about buying a t3/t4 turbo from a friend of his. Not really sure he will go through with it or not yet.

But just for the sake of planning and conversation. I was hoping someone could help me weigh out my options here.

I currently have an Evo 8 16g with the bigger 10.5 hotside. I assumed this would help me get more midrange power instead of being extremely torquey with the 2.4l engine and have a wider powerband since it is twinscroll. Also figured since it is internally wastegated it would be simpler on piping.

So how would this setup compare to the T3/T4 turbo? I know I would need to add piping for an external wastegate. I hear that the T4 spools faster (meaning more torque), and produces more flow but Im not sure how accurate that is.

Any input or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

t4 spools faster or t3/t4 spools faster? and on what kind of engine was this comparison done? if the difference is 300rpm or less, you have no real reason to care.

the t3/t4 spools faster than your standard t4 on an Evo. Apparently its a hybrid with the t4 induction side, and a smaller t3 hotside. Thats just based on what I remember reading a long time ago. I didnt know if it would spool faster or slower than the 10.5 hotside 16g. Im not really looking for a real torque heavy setup Id rather have mid range power. Not sure which one would give me the best results. I imagine my 16g would being as its twin scroll. But im not really sure how the two compare...

the t4 compressor will move more air, for longer, but later on in the band...myself i like getting boost early so i can use it at low rpm...mama says turbo lag is the devil...

LMAO true. I thought the T4/T3 combo was supposed to solve the "later in the band" issue.

Now that Im getting Smikes old RA. Things have changed a bit. Still debating on whether to reinforce the bottom end or not.

Your over on Club4g arent you crans? What have you seen the stock bottom end handle? Your spikes to 14psi occasionally right?

I honestly don't think anyone else is running 14psi on the stock block...most 4g guys run between 5 and 8 psi as far as I know.

Im starting to think the 4g69 is stronger on the bottom end than people think it is. The 4g64 uses different metal con rods and it could hold 20psi if tuned properly. The g69 uses the same metal con rods as the g63. And the block and crank have been proven to hold more than 35psi thanks to mitsuorder's build. That only leaves the pistons to question.

Anywho. I think im going to go ahead and stick with the 16g for my build as I already have a flange for it and I doubted my dad would actually buy the T4/T3 anyway. So far he hasnt anyway.

The rods maybe the same material as the 63 but pistons may not be. There would have to be a weaker point in the 69

it's gotta be the pistons. I heard they have smaller ring lands than the 4g63, but have not seen this myself. also ours are not actively cooled.
